Last Asian Flight From Portland (KPDX)?

Tue Apr 17, 2001 9:46 am

As of March 31, 2001, Delta has stopped International flight to Nagoya, Japan from Portland. Can you tell me if they are discontinuing international services from Portland (KPDX) as they did to Dallas/Fort Worth (KDFW)...?

Yes they downsized thier Portland "hub" on March 31. They took the nrt flight and switched it to Jfk, and the Nagoya flight to Lax. Now they only fly to Slc, Atl, Jfk, and I think Cvg.

DL flies to all DL hubs from PDX: SLC, ATL, JFK, CVG, and DFW.

Anyone wanting to go to Asia from PDX and not interline must now go PDX-SLC-LAX-Asia. Smart thinking, Delta.

It really makes no sense to me why they didn't stick another LA flight in there, or atleast make it a one stopper through SLC. But it does make sense about the Asian flights. Unfortunatley for us in Portland we gotta interline on AS (meaning a LONG walk) or UAS through LAX. Now, who would want to start an Asian trip on UAS. I believe it's worse than some trains in Tokyo.

Hopefully we'll get a feeder flight down there.

I too was disappointed to find out that the Spring Schedule axed DL209, which was the last remaining LAX flight out of PDX. The least we could have done for the City of Portland was leave the LAX flight intact to allow connections.

Then again, it was all they could do to keep Atlanta from axing the JFK flight too.

The question now is whether or not there is life after Delta for PDX. I think the answer is yes.

Hopefully UA or JL will come in with an NRT flight. Something like that would fit better with UA or JL since UA is so strong on the West Coast, and JL of course has the NRT hub. PDX has a market for NRT flights, just not as an international gateway for a major carrier.

I would expect JAL to start a Narita flight but noy UAL . There is the market for a PDX-NRT flight and JAL should start flying that route. There are no Asian carriers at PDX right?

Neither JA or UA will start flying to Asia from Portland. Our best hope is KE, or Nippon, as both these airlines have a presence here (as cargo carriers). United has the SkyWest connections to Seattle, where they have a rather large operation there, and then the Shuttle flights that feed to the SF/LA flights to Asia. Although, flying to Narita from Seattle takes a good 2 hours off the flight time from SF and almost 3 from LA. We've heard that ANA and KE will start looking at the economics of flying to PDX in 2002, and we should expect a decision by the end of Q1 in 2003. I'm sure that we'll see the DL M11s here every now and then. When a strike is looming, the planes always seem to break...

On a different note, I was down at PDX a couple nights ago, and the whole Delta end of the D councourse is being remodled. Aside from NW parking a 320 there overnight, the customs area is being taken out. The gates down there D13, 14, and 15 no longer have the Delta logo on them, a good sign that Delta will NOT be renewing their lease on these gates.

I guess I should spend more time in Seattle now...a bit more activity, although the airport really sucks.

Its a shame that the immigration at Portland got so tough Delta pulled out. I had the joy of flying Tokyo - Portland - Saltlake city last year. Very nice airport.

I assume you all knew about those problems with so many asians being sent back that it became deportland.

I guess it's the perception that counts, whatever the numbers unfortunately.

Actually, the INS was just the "nail in the coffin" for the flights. Perhaps if it wasn't a major issue, the prices would have been raised, or the flights would be 5x or 4x weekly.

Regardless of the number being deported, it hast to do with how they are treated. There is NO reason to strip search a student who just happens to have the wrong "color" or stamp on her passport. If it was a prisioner then it would be understandable, but not a student. Then, they throw her in a car, and put her in a JAIL! That's a crock of shi*.

I'll get off my soap box now...I've been "getting up" on it too much.
