Would You Rather Go Nonstop Or Multistop?

Wed Apr 18, 2001 2:04 am

Often I connect to gain segments towards elite status. (Recently, for example, I flew ORD-DSM-DEN-PHX-LAX). Often I try to connect in order to fly an airliner of choice.

My partner thinks I am crazy for wanting to stop in many cities along the way! He likes to up and down once, and sleep on the plane. I get stir crazy. I'd rather peruse an airport I have never seen!

What do others prefer?

Of course it's nice to see new airports and get a few hours on different aiports to look at the planes and listen to ATC. Be for someone who's not aviation interested this can seem a little crazy, I understand them.

Depend on what situation I am flying. If I was not in rush to the destination or my wife isn't with me, I would take stopovers.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

When I fly coast to coast (ie. east coast to west coast or vice versa) I prefer at least a stop in central US. Flying time will be beyond 3 hours or so for each leg. O f course, spending time at airports, and eating a REAL meal, and walking around the airport when I do not get up on flights 'cept if I have to use the washroom really bad for really long flights. however, I can control my bladder until we get to the airport.

Spending too much time in the air ain't too great so I guess I wouldn't mind if I had to make a connection. I love to to that especially flying internatioanlly. I once made a stop in Kuwait City on a LHR-DEL flight. I loved the airport and atleast I have the bragging rights of being in Kuwait.

Zrs70:

I prefer connections also, for the same reasons as you.

However, once I've gained elite for the year and if there's no particular airliner I want to fly on, then it's definately non-stop.

My wife thinks I'm crazy, and gets even more worried when I take a flight with a stop, but oh well.

If I'm alone and flying on a purchased ticket, I will always try to expand the number of aircraft I've flown on and airports I have seen. If I'm a non-rev or with family, nonstop is the preferred option. As somebody said a few weeks ago, standby can mean stand and wave goodbye to your flight, so why risk getting stuck in an out-station...

Non-stop.

I also like to sleep on the plane, that's why I prefer flights that depart late in the evening.

multistop, with a different A/C type each time if possible.

Check out these routes I have taken from Australia to Europe and return:

Garuda: ADL MEL DPS CGK SIN FCO AMS (train) BRU and return via the same route except it was BRU (train) FRA SIN etc

United: ADL SYD SFO YYZ ORD IAD BRU and return BRU CDG SFO LAX SYD ADL

It gets a little tiring after a while but for example on my first ever trip with United, I managed to get on a good deal of their different jet A/C types (744, 320, 752, 777, 763, 733).

Even between home and uni (approx 1000km), instead of doing ADL-CBR direct, I usually try doing ADL-MEL-SYD-CBR. The airlines allow it in their fare rules so why not?

Nonstop of course.

More connections mean there is a bigger chance of lost connections, delays, lost luggage etc. I like planes, but don't like to travel this way.

I am not a fan of connecting. I always try to take the non-stop method, though when I need to connect, I like to connect first. For example, on my recent trip to Italy and Greece I had arranged flying MIA-MXP non-stop on AZ. I was returning from ATH, but there are no direct flights between ATH and MIA, so I planned to connect first and fly ATH-IST-MIA on TK. Sadly, I had some last minute schedule changes and I needed to change my plans and I ended up flying DL MIA-JFK-MXP there and DL ATH-JFK-ATL-MIA back. It sucked!

I would rather make multi-stops, that way I can see different airports, do some plane watching while Im waiting for the connecting flight, and I would have a chance of flying on different types of planes.

Multistop to experience different airports and possibly different aircraft.

I usually fly non-stop (my parents hate flying and there the ones that are paying), but when ever possible like say when I fly by myself I like multi-stop. I like multi not necesarily for the aircraft of choice but because you get to visit new airports, talk to different people, maybe even take pics for the personal collection  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

after reading the comments...yes multistop is nice but with the same aircraft. I remember a long time ago flying from europe to Asia for holidays and we would stop in places like Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Delhi. Most of these stops are no longer, except when you fly Emirates or Gulf Air from europe to asia. But if I have to change and make connections, that could be nerve wrecking too if the first plane is late then the rest of the trip is a big mess. its ok if you get stuck in a nice city, but what if it is a very boring city ?
Now unfortunately we dont have those interesting stops anymore. I flew LH to Asia (CGK) CDG FRA connecting to a non stop to SIN direct to CGK. AF was nonstop to SIN and direct to CGK. So, the layovers were just SIN...and if you have been there a couple of times it gets boring, except when you have enough time to go on the swimming pool and watch airplanes whilst lying by the pool !! I also miss the HNL stop that used to be in all flights between australia and the US west coast.

Aussie_:

You once made the route with United: ADL SYD SFO YYZ ORD IAD BRU, right?

Then, I just want to know, did you get a REALLY long baggage tag with 7 airport codes??

I prefer nonstops, but I would make a connection if it meant a lower fare.

Non-stop all the way !!!

The greatest risk in flying is during the takeoff and landings. The fewer the better.

Multi-stop flights take to long.

There are greater chances of delays due to weather and traffic, etc.

And, as I gain status thru miles as opposed to segments....it's just plain simpler.

Carioca Canuck,

The GREATEST thrill in flying is during the takeoff and landings. The more the merrier !

Enjoy the hard touchdowns, strong crosswinds during landing. Very THRILLING. Aviation enthusiast will LOVE it !

Multistop would be better because, I do not want to stay stcuked with a boring passenger throughout the whole flight. New faces, makes you smile !

Cheers,

Multi. No question.

If I had it my way, I would stop at every airport that had anything better than a grass runway.
