Montreal-Dorval(YUL) Expansion

Wed Apr 18, 2001 10:41 am

Hello, Montreal-Dorval Airport(YUL) is currently being expanded but the airport authority recently announced that they will downgrade the expansion. Does anyone know what won't and what will be built? Or If anyone has any more info on this subject, please informe me!

Thanks

Well, they're still building the transborder finger (they're already well into it), but I think that the next phase is on hold... I forget exactly what the next phase was supposed to be, thoguh! Ahh well, check their website and whatever they say is Phase 2, or for 2004 or something, that's what they're NOT diong...  Nuts

Dorval is amongs the worst airports i have ever been. Unfortunatly, i'm based in Mtl. and i have to use it. It surely isn't up to world standards and that extra $10 you have to pay drives me nuts. Why give money to an airport i hate and doesn't even deserve to be an international airport. The departures area is cramped and much too small. Just my personal opinion. I have travelled to a lot of airports, including under-developed nations in africa.

I believe as well that Dorval is one of the worst airport in the world.

As far as the expansion: no one knows for sure what ADM (Aéroport de Montréal) (Company managing Montreal's airports) wants to do.

In my opinion, there are people at ADM cashing on those $10 departure fees.

The only solution for Montreal is to close Dorval and move to YMX (Mirabel)

I think the International finger is the phase on hold. I also suspect they will announce a revised plan in May.

I don't have a big problem with Dorval. It is easier to go through than many other airports. Departure level check in is cramped I will agree but only at peak hours. I would have preferred they developed Mirabel as well but Dorval can work well enough for the volume Montreal can generate. I don't see it growing much beyond it's traditional role within the North American travel route network anyhow so a good revision of the existing facilities with some expansion every now and then would be enough to keep this relatively quiet airport functioning well into this century.

When is the new transborder finger supposed to be done? Does it include new customs facilities for arriving passengers (the US customs facilities are new). As far as the airport is concerned, I like it. The check in area seems small suring peak times, but is nice otherwise. The US customs facilities are new, bright, and I have never experienced a long line. The concourses are average, a little small, but not horrible. Plus the Maple Leaf Lounges are nice. I think the place has come a long way from what it was. I am happy that DOrval was chosen over Mirabel for the reason of convenience. It is close to downtown, and parking (while expensive) is convienent to the terminal. If you want to visit an aweful airport, go to Hartford, CT, that place is a piece of S*&t.

"Why don' you ask the admin. directly? They should be in a better position to answer you. "

hehe....good joke.....if only they would answer. In fact, there is only a small circle of people at ADM who actually know what is happening. Most of the Authority are being kept in the dark about the project.

The new transborder finger is due to open in 2002 approximately. It was supposed to have new customs facilities, but at this time it is not known. But they are constructing a large square building where it meets the terminal, so that could be the facilities in question.

Dorval is a good airport. It is only congested during the peak hours, and lays mostly empty for many hours of the day. Why make a huge airport at Mirabel so we can have a bigger empty airport?

I disagree completely with anyone that says Dorval should be closed. That tells me they should look into the subject a bit more. Maybe flights should have ben moved to Mirabel, but Bombardier has a good thing going at Dorval. The General Aviation area should also be kept in a case of a move to Mirabel. Close 28 and 24R and keep 24L with Bombardier, General Aviation and maybe a small regional terminal. I've already seen one Montreal Airport disapear in my lifetime (Cartierville) and I don't want to see Dorval completely disapear either.

What's that small building being built at the side of the new Transborder Finger? Is that the new train station?

The small building is not the train station. The station was only to be added after 2004 if things went well financially. It is most likely something not that important. Somewere to store vehicles or something.

The building I was speaking of originally is the building in the bottom photo. Where the finger meets the terminl the finger grows into a larger building. That will most likely be somekind of Customs or immigration facilities. At least I hope.

The new facilities can airlines that are in need or more space, much more space...

For example, AA/Dl/CO/NW dont own any gates anymore. Instead, they all fight for gates 15-20-22-24..4 gates for 4 airlines....

It really know looks like Dorval has come to a dead end. Air Canada has cancelled flights to Denver, Edmonton, London,Ont, Rome, Tel Aviv and Windsor, in one single year...those losses really suck the blood out of anything we had...

It seems like everybody is content sending pax through Toronto, and ADM seems to be heading in no particular direction.

It's funny because you watch the Calgary Authority attack AC and force them to start new routes, claiming they are underserved...WELL Ive got a newsflash for some people..Montreal's population is 3.5million, and we've got 2 airport that are worth 10 million pax together....and now that we dont have links to many vital North American and World airports, it's really putting us down the scale of things..

Its sad but what can you do anymore..

I dont know why you think BDL (Bradley International) is such a bad airport like you said. You obvioulsy dont know much about the airport since they are in the start of a 400 million dollar terminal expansion project that will add 15 new gates and bring the total number to around 37. Terminal B now is old and nasty I will agree, but the current terminal A is modern and nice, I guess you never saw that did you? Also almost complete is a new 4500 parking spot garage. Did you not see the 4-star Sharaton hotel between terminals A and B either?
