Should CX Consider Narrowbodies As Well?

Wed Apr 18, 2001 1:16 pm

Hi everyone!

Do you guys think Cathay Pacific should consider using narrowbodies for one or two flights like HKG-Taipei etc?

I have heard rumours saying that CX is planning to launch flights to China again. Can anyone confirm this?

Why should they order narrowbodies for HKG-TPE while the demand is high enough to fill up 747s?

Additional flights maybe?

Or should they consider flying to China again with narrowbodies like A 320s or B 737NGs?

Demand between Hong Kong and China should be pretty high due to that Hong Kong is one of the busiest transit points between China and Taiwan.

KA do fly to China, starting in June they will compete with CX on the Taipei route. They have two new A330's coming next month.

CX was looking at smaller freighters, not sure if they still are.

Personally I do not think that CX will ever consider the narrow body jets. Why? very simple. Hong Kong has two passenger airlines : Cathay Pacific and Dragonair.
While Cathay Pacific is an all wide body airline operating long haul flights, Dragonair has a narrow body fleet and concentrates on the short and medium haul flights, mainly to the mainland China. I guess there is no place for CX in this market. They can take a chance and try to compete with Dragonair , but what for? They have enough troubles to care about.
What CX should do next (my opinion) is to acquire more aircraft in order to open routes to the new long awaited destinations that would generate lots of revenue.

UnitedAirline:

I dont think CX would be looking at narrowbodies at all. They need big planes and fly high demand routes.

Its like Qantas many years ago when they just flew international routes. Ansett and Australian Airlines were the masters of the Domestic market.

Basically the same with CX and Dragonair.

They should consider the new Boeing Jet as well as the B 747-400ER/LR.

Hkgspotter,
Is that REAL that KA will compete with CX on the HKG-TPE route? I didn't even have heard of that!!! Where you get this news?
That would be interesting to see CX and KA competing on the same route as they have been operating on different route for many years already!

CX will never buy narrow-body jets.

The reason is simple: every one of their major routes are filled to capacity. What CX needs are more A330-300's, 777-200's and 777-300's.

CX could end up flying as many as 15 A380-800's by 2010 just to cover routes like HKG-NRT, HKG-SYD, HKG-LHR, HKG-YYZ, HKG-YVR, HKG-JFK, HKG-LAX and possibly HKG-SFO.
