747SP-UCH!

Hello fellow aviationists  Big thumbs up

Don't you just hate the 747SP?? I do, it looks like a toy plane that kids buy, I saw 3 of them today, SAA, Qantas and Saudi Arabian. They look manky!!!

I disagree!!!!! The 747 SP was for long the queen of the very long haul routes. It has for that reason alone a romantic air about it. The appearance of the a/c to me is fine, and have you noticed the difference in engine sound those P&W JT9D 7FN engines makes to other "classic" 747'S?

Some aircraft are too short or too long--usually a matter of proportions. I agree with you about the SP. The A319 and the 737-600 are also too short. "Manky," I suppose. The 757-300 and especially 777-300 look too long in relation to the height of their tails. Just my opinion.

Lindy,

Do you think the 340-600 is too long? i personally think it looks great and can't wait to see it flying.
Next flight.... who knows.

Sorry if i didn't explain about my expressions  Smile Manky is a British word for disgusting. the -600 is too long, the 737-600 should be longer like the 737-500 should be longer.

I couldn't disagree with you more!! It's my favorite airplane after the 777-200. I also think the 777-300 and the A340-600 are way too long. The777Man

The 747SP is a superb aircraft, I would have it anytime over most other 'newer' widebodys.
I love it when a plan comes together

SP rules! I love its looks and performance. If I had to choose between the 777, the 340 and the SP for my private plane, I would choose the SP. It has a more elegant yet strong image.

Jean Leloup,

I haven't yet had a really good look at the A340-600. I just find the tail a little too small for the body length of the 777-300.

What do all the rest of you think of the 737-900?

Actually, I completely agree with EGKK. I've always hated the SP. It was a stupid attempt by boeing to build a better version of the 747. Its so short and stubby, looks like a really bad plane. I think airbus is better at shrinking their planes, they don't over do it.

I have also read somewhere that

The ground staff "tought" that the plane 747-SP is normal 747 and then pulled it so near the gate that it actually touched the passenger bay at that gate.

This is because of its different (short) geometry!

I am sorry mate, but many people as u can see will disagree with you on this one. The 747SP is superb and I prefer the looks of it over any other 747 version flying. The tail is taller, the fuselage is shorter and on the QF RR powered ones, the roar of the engines is just amazing.

I agree with u totally . I love to hear the sound of the B747SP RR engines roaring down the runway then rotating into the sky heading to another destination , that is very classic .

Boeing 747SP are always my favourite classic  Smile

Who said that Airbus is better at shrinking planes than Boeing??? Boeing has only done one shrinking with a commercial plane, as they are more with stretching. The 737-500/600 were not shrinks, they were the New- and Next-Generation versions of the 732. Airbus is about to embark on the same route as the 747 with the A318(Taller tail, shorter plane).

I agree with you EGKK!
The SP is just too short,it looks like a caricature plane, really.
Same goes for the 737-600.It is almost as tall as it is long, step hard on the brakes and it will tumble head over heels Laugh out loud

The 747SP is also my favourite plane. Some time ago I read that South African (not sure) will try to to break a record which was done by the 747SP. I think it is a pole to pole flight in a certain time. The 747SP is also one of the few conventional planes, which went faster then the speed of sound (China Airlies incident if i remember correctly).

Most of you kids seem to completely have forgotten or don't know the reason for the 74L!!! Let me ask you this: What other commercial aircraft could regularly make JFK-NRT, SFO-HKG, LAX-SYD, JFK-RUH and other routes around this distance non-stop in the late 70's and early 80's??? If you can figure this out you may be able to see the reasons behind this plane and why it was built. My late uncle helped to design and build the tail for this plane and this is why it is one of my favorites.

It looks so beautiful with the short and chubby fueslage.
To bad there are only a few airlines operating it and that they soon will be retired : (

The SP is very cute. I really like the Baby-Jumbo. It looks massive and sweet at the same time. Its not as elegant as the B747-400, okay, sure, I agree.
Some people don´t like short planes, others, like me, don´t like long sticks, i.e. the ugly B777-300.

The SP is one of the world´s most outstanding aircraft and I would have loved it if Boeing could have made a modern version of it (instead of the more boring TripleSeven).

I'm one of those, Na: I hate short airplanes, or better said, too short in proportion to their diameter... But I don't know how, I happen to LOVE B737-200, A318 and B747SP.
On the opposite hand (long ones) I love stretched airplanes: the "flying pencil" (757-300), A321 (I have flown in a couple of them). I HAVE to fly in A340-600 and B777-300. How must it be to take off seated on the very last row????

I like the streched one's, I like the A340-600, 757 and the A321

Na: I suppose it is like a Baby Jumbo, I always thought it looked like something that has "srugged" it's shoulders, like when I person doesn't know something and they shrug their shoulders, I am not making any sense here am I????  Nuts

I agree that it is not the most elegant pale around, but its contours
are nice, and it's a versatile plane. Since only 45 have been built, it's a rare
sight; I only recall seeing 3 or 4 in my life. The 747SP will always have a place
in my heart.

Not surprisingly EGKK's question "Don't you just hate the 747SP??" has caused some protest. To my opinion he is right when he says the SP would look like a toy plane but he should argue more carefully.  Innocent

A rare sight indeed; I was surprised to see one in the boneyard here at LAS...I'll see if I can get the tail nmbr if anyones is interested.

As for the looks, it reminds me of the mid-70's versions of the Ford Mustang...the contours are still there but the look is just not quite right!
