Air NZ Shows Interest In Sonic Cruiser

Thu Apr 19, 2001 6:33 am

Apart from the recent Ansett controversy, Air NZ have expressed interest in buying the Sonic Cruiser in about 8-10 years to replace ageing 767-300ER's then.

Currently they have shown interest in the 747-400ER that Qantas have ordered with possibility entering the fleet 2003-2005 to simultaneously replace 747-400's.

Also the PTV's in economy look like later this year with the revised Business Class.

They want to buy the sonic cruiser in 8-10 yrs. It won't even be flying by then probably. But you never know, do you?

It was just purely a number of years, they are talking about in the future they could see them intergrate into a 21st century fleet.

BTW - Looks like Ansett will lease up to 5 767-300ER's for a while and meanwhile order new 767-300's/400's.

I agree. Except that we don't really know what it will look like.

An Air NZ DC-8 did AKL-SYD in 1h 58 min in the late '60s!

To fly AKL-SYD in 1hr 50 mins is nearly a halving of the current flight time. I don't think the Sonic Cruiser is quite that fast. We are only talking about a cruise speed increase of Mach 0.85 to Mach 0.95.

To Tullamarine:

Do not forget the futuristic forms of the Sonic Cruiser.
I think the government of every country would love to see the SC in the fleet of its flag carrier just to show how advanced their state is  Big thumbs up

What I mean by advanced is :
Back in Lebanon in 1999 at the airport:
When you see a British Airways 777 landing you hear people say with respect, admiration and jealousy "This aircraft is from Great Britain". But when a noisy Tu 154 of Balkan comes in view people just say with disgust "These are Bulgarians". Aircraft makes an image to the country, and Sonic Cruiser is able to give it.
I'm not talking about Sudan spending its five years budget on SC just for the sake of image. Do not misunderstand me.  Big grin

I agree with Tullmarine, that the sonic cruiser will only be about 10% faster, and I don't think it would be capable of flying AKL-SYD in 1h 50m.
