Thu Apr 19, 2001 7:48 am

The question is in the topic. How many operational 747SP's are out there as of today? Thanks

Qantas has one and I think the remainder just about all belong to Arabian oil sheiks who can't fit their entourage into a G IV...

Qantas in fact have 2 in service, although their days are numbered with the coming of the new 744's on order and the 333's on order.
South African still have several in service 4 or 5 I think. There is also the Syrian Air aircraft and Iran Air and I believe Corsair still operate their 1.
Most others are in V.I.P config or sitting in the desert awaiting the inevitable wreckers axe.

Listing Of "active" SP's

Thu Apr 19, 2001 10:20 am

There are currently still 25 listed as "active", however this list could include some that are active on certain operators fleets but are parked awaiting sale/disposal.
IranAir x 4 EP-IAA EP-IAB EP-IAC EP-IAD South African x 3 ZS-SPA ZS-SPC ZS-SPE Syrian Air x 2 YK-AHA YK-AHB Corsair x 1 F-GTOM Qantas x 2 VH-EAA VH-EAB Iraqi Airways x 1 5Y-GFD Gulf Falcon x 1 5Y-GFC. That's it commercially. Of the other 11, they are all used as part of Governmental fleets or as private jets.
Qatar Government x 1, Bahrain Amiri Flight x 1, Saudi Royal Flight/Saudi Government x 3, Yemen Government x 2, Oman Government x 1, United Arab Emirates x 2 and the FAA is using one as a test-bed of some sort.
The remaining craft of the total built fleet have a scattered presence - some quite "literally" scattered!
There are 5 ex UA craft dismantled awaiting scrapping (don't know where), 6 stored at Marana, 2 stored at Victorville, 1 stored at Las Vegas, 1 stored at Tozeur, 1 stored at Jakarta, 1 listed as being modified at Waco and 1 that has been scrapped.
Best info that I could come up with - usual caveat applies as this info is a month old.
Cheers. Al.

I remember reading on this forum that the one in Waco is owned by some rich middle eastern potentate and is having a 747-400 flight deck and other improvements put in.

That's pretty cool. Imagine having an SP w/ modern flight deck and engines as your private jet.

I'll take one of those over a BBJ anyday  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

One other point - I believe because of the age of the SP's (and the fact that other aircraft types are better suited to SP operations) that an SP is of more value in parts than as a complete aircraft!!!

The 747SP in Waco, is N145UA (ex United) and it's being modified for NASA to carry to telescope.

There's currently 25 747SP in active service.
One was recently bought by FAA Tech center to be used to test ground-based and aircraft-based fuel tank inerting. This one will not be in service.

More details on all 747SP's at http://www.747sp.com

Hi,

I think there is a wrong information!
Gulf Falcon doesn't operate SP anymore cause they sold them to Iraqi as a VIP plane!

Have a look at www.747SP.com

My only 747 flight to date was on one of United's 747SP's from MIA to IAD. The plane (likely to be an ex Pan Am as I recall UA getting their SP's from PA in 1985) was quite smooth but a bit noisy in the cabin and the interior and IFE electronics looked dated, compared with a 757-222 which I had flown earleir on that same day. I do not recall the reg number but it is sad to hear that it is in scrap.

Too bad.
