Why A380?

Why did Airbus designate their new jumbo A380? What happened to A350, A360 and A370?

The 8 indicates the double deck.

Usage of 380 also gives them some room for any eventual further developments in the future of other aircraft.

I have heard because 8 is a lucky number in Asia. It means success and riches.

This is probably a stupid suggestion on my part but, perhaps Airbus wanted it to use a higher number than 7 because the highest model number used by their competition is B777 & A350 might have seemed to be less impressive to such aviation challenged people as certain members of the media? That certainly would be the type of thing that has been done often in the computer industry by certain competing manufacturers.

350: not to far away from 340, they wanted to make a more significant difference.

360: Well, a three-sixty in aviation is something different.

370: seven is an unlucky number in asia

so.... 380

Just a thought.....

If "7" is an unlucky number in Asia, then why a lot of Asian carriers operate Boeing jets?? Since all of their model names start (and end) with "7"....

All those other other numbers are assigned to other fantasy ideas....
