Continental Tower @ EWR

Fri Apr 20, 2001 2:34 am

Can anyone tell me what exactly the tower being built by Continental Airlines at EWR is supposed to do? Also, when is it scheduled to be completed? Thank You.

Most likely, the tower will just stand there.

It will handle gate/ground ops for Continental. Not sure when it'll be ready.

Im not sure when you were there last but the thing is HUGE!.

It's larger than the current EWR ATC tower and stockier than the new FAA tower going up,it's going to be real nice when complete probably by late 2001 or early '02. They're moving along quite rapidly with construction, the facility will handle ramp operations for CAL and replace a facility in their basement. CAL recently built two smaller ramp control towers at IAH (one for the South and North parts of TerminalC). The purpose of the tower is to coordinate the movement of aircraft and vehicles on their ramps and taxi ways, and to steamline ground operations.

The EWR FAA tower will be finished perhaps by mid-late fall, however it will be subjected to many tests and a certification period which means it will not take over operations from the current tower until about 6-9 months after it's completion. Which means the new FAA tower will probably become operational by late Summer 2002.

Speaking of the FAA tower, does anybody know why it was put in front of the Marriott hotel? Will the tower be able to 'see' over the terminals to the aircraft that are parked up against the terminals? Does it need to? Just curious...

The new FAA tower is over 325 feet tall and much larger than the Marriott,it can see everything on the airport property and has some of the best views of the NYC area.

Here's that new CAL ramp tower in the back ground of this picture,I was at EWR today and this structure is much further along. Another couple of weeks and it will be ready for the glass.

Here's the current tower,I wish the PA could save this building and just move it like they just did with EWR's original Terminal.
