AA Super 80's, Formerly QQ's

Fri Apr 20, 2001 6:55 am

How long will AA retain their white fuselage on their MD80's and -90's from Reno Air? Are they going to keep their -90's?

The white fuselage on the former QQ planes will remain white. If they were to sand the paint off, it wouldn't have the same shine on the fuselage that AA's planes normally have. Thats why AA planes are shipped with no paint on. I don't think they are keeping the 90's.

The M90s are going pretty fast, I believe 901 and 902 are gone already. I don't know who's getting them, or if they are going to the desert for storage. The M87s have been slowly going since the merger.

MD-90-30s Of QQ

Fri Apr 20, 2001 8:40 am

they are ALL already gone. They were returned to their lessors, and this was schedule during the month of March. Different dates for each plane. I don't remember the exact dates, but some were the 16th some were the 31st I believe. BUT they're all gone.

The MD-90s are all gone. I went to see the last AA MD-90 flight on March 31. It was N902RA flying from SJC-SNA. I can't post the pictures since I am on a trip now.

Hmm, I wonder how they will 'paint' TWA's former aircraft? (Since they can't sand them, then what)?

I'm sure that the paint can be removed and the jets can be polished to match AA specs. Most of the great AA DC1030 fleet acquired during the 1980s were from carriers such as Pan Am and Air New Zealand, and I'm sure there are other examples of this in the fleet (727?).

well maybe they can. I heard from somewhere that under the paint the bare metal would be discolored after a long period of time. And QQ's 80's were not brand new.

I don't think they are all gone. I've asked this question before and have been told that the 90s and 87s are all gone but they will have the 80s until the end of the year.

The former QQ MD90s are all gone, however, the MD80s and MD87s are still around and will be phased out over the course of this year.
