Have You Ever Experienced An Emergency Landing?

Fri Apr 20, 2001 12:43 pm

Just curious to know how many of you frequent flyers out there have ever encountered an in-flight emergency first-hand?
On my very first flight, the plane (a TWA L-1011) was struck by lightning.....which was a bit frightening for a 12-year-old kid, to say the least! Anybody else ever experience this? Or any similar "my-life's-flashing-before-my-eyes" kind of events?

I was once in an B 737-400 that had a landing gear problem. On finals the pilots didn't get the three green lights suggesting that the gears are out and locked. So for some time, everybody assumed that we're going to belly land. Some people nearly collapsed from fear. We made four fly-bys over the tower for them to try to visually locate the gear even though we were landing at night. On the second fly-by the captain annouced that the tower saw the gear but we still made three fly-bys to make sure. It's funny because with or without gear, we'll have to land ultimately. After one hour of fly-bys we landed! As we touched down, I was kind of expecting for the gear to collapse...but they didn't. We were rapidely surrounded by fire trucks but we still taxied normally to the gate. In the terminal, I found that my father freaked out more than I did. they didn't annouce the cause of the delay in the terminal but he asked some stupid agent about the flight and the guy told him "Yeah, that's the plane with landing gear problem!"

My parents were on a then US Air flight from CLT when a bomb threat was found in the galley. The plane was escorted by police and fire vehicles to a remote area of the tarmac where it was unloaded and inspected. No bomb was ever found and neither was the "bomber".
That'll happen!

During my training I was flying solo around the middle of nowhere in Australia and suddenly needed the toilet. I had to fly as fast as possible to the nearest airfield and relieve myself before it was too late. I considered briefly doing it out the window but decided it could wait. It was an emergency though.

I never have but my dad was on a US A319 in August SAN-PHL where the starboard engine exploded immediately after take-off and they made an emergency landing back at SAN.

You died? How was it?

Serious. I´ve never experienced an emergency landing and I hope I never will. But a few years ago I witnessed passengers just leaving a Condor 767 (maybe a 757, I can´t remember 100% for sure) with engine failure some time after take-off (They were about 30 minutes in the air, I knew one of the passengers from my hotel who told me so). Their faces told me: Never fly a Twinjet if you have a choice.

In 1996 (or 1995) i was flying an Olympic 747 to Montreal. During our takeoff roll in Athens, the tower informed the captain that there was a bomb threat for our flight. The takeoff was aborted immediately with the use of brakes and full reverse thrust. The plane was moved to a location away from the terminals and our suitcases were carried in a hangar. They had dogs and inspected the aircraft and our baggage. I was travelling alone and I went back to the VIP lounge and waited. My father who had just left the airport was informed by the captain who was his friend and he came back. Then we had to identify our suitcases so that they could be loaded back inside. We boarded the aircraft once again and we left. There was no bomb. If the pilot hadn't been noticed in time we would have made an emergency landing.

I was on a CO DC-10 from IAH to SFO (a rare enough occurence), when about half an hour into the flight, we all of a sudden dumped fuel and turned around. Turns out that they had to shut down one of the engines. I never even noticed. When we got back to IAH, we milled around until the DC-10 from LAX arrived so we could get on that one instead. I noticed that the LAX DC-10 was much more cramped and uncomfortable than the one I was on previously. I think CO has two seating arrangements for their DC-10s, normal and cattle car.

I never have and one part of me hopes that i never will. But at the same time it could be interesting to have done somthing that all others don't, as long as it doesn't go really bad Big grin.

My stepfather was on a Delta L-1011 when they got a bomb threat. Everyone had just boarded, and they were still at the gate. They came on the mic telling everyone to leave their stuff and get off the plane immediatly. Everyone was lead to a room and were told what was going on. My stepfather said Delta handled everything really well. It turned out to be a false alarm.

I thought it was pretty interesting!

My airline career began as a flight attendant, and I was on duty on a Dash-8 that experienced a bird strike while still climbing, shook up the A/C (not to mention the pax) and disabled engine 2. We did an Air Turnback and landed with no additional event. Scary, but its true how the training takes over (even though I had the easy part)

American Airlines flight for Chicago to Dussuldorf, Germany in the summer of 95'. We were just waking up for breakfast...you could see smoke on the floor. The pilot came on the intercom and said something about an emergency...the flight attendants through the trays back breaking glass. I looked out the window and all I could see was icebergs. scary....We landed in Glasgow Scotland...apparently it was a fire in the cockpit. We were stuck in the basement of the Airport for more than 8 hours....

I was on an AA M80 from DFW-OKC and we blew the left inboard main gear tire on departure. We returned to DFW and made an uneventful landing.
-------------------------------------------------
A friend of mine was on a NW 72S that landed a few years back in TPA with a minor problem.

The #3 engine fell off somewhere in South Georgia.

His wife got a GREAT shot of it as it taxied in. USA Today ran the pic.

When I was a Travel Agent, I booked one of my clients on the UA D10 flight that crashed in SUX. He said once everything came to a halt, he was hanging upside down, still strapped in his seat. He unbukled his seat belt, hit the ground and didn't have a scratch. He flew back to ORD the next day and continued to fly immediately afterward for business.

After all of that, I'd have been in line at Avis or Hertz for a "drive" back to Chicago!

In 1998 I was on a US Airways 757 from BDL en route to PIT. We were about half an hour into the flight at cruising altitude when I felt a slight horizantle jolt. I thought it was turbulence until the captain announced that we were having some "slight technical problems with our right engine." He then announced that we would be landing at PHL just as a precaution. Everything seemed normal until we were greeted by literally dozens of fire trucks and ambulences after a routine landing. After talking to the first officer I learned we had lost our right engine. I couldn't believe it. Some "slight technical problem." Nobody on the plane had any idea that we were at any risk.

I had one on a flight from CVG to SEA, a woman had a heart attack! We landed in Billings
I was very young so I was sort of freaked.
None since then, although I was on another Delta flight when the MD-11 tail engine got messed up.

Departed Philadelphia in April 1991 aboard a TWA 727 enroute to St. Louis when after departure the Captain came on the intercom and mentioned that the engine fire light was on. We turned around and landed at PHL.
I was put on American Airlines and my luggage went on

Well, I have technically been in a plane crash! It was on a Laos Aviation 737 from Bangkok to Vientiane and when we landed at Vientiane the pilot completely overshot the runway and we finally stopped with the front 3rd of the a/c engulfed in jungle! The funny thing is, we KNEW he had completely overshot, so surely the pilot or the co-pilot must have known before a landing attempt was made!

Laos Aviation - Avoid!
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

Back in 1980 on a United flight from LAX-JFK a piece of the wing came off our plane and we had to return to LAX. We dumped fuel, got into the position and landed.

Non event. The dumping fuel was really cool.

I have never been in an emergency before in an airliner... the roughest turbulence i have been in were some light CAT when i was really young and another time we flew through the wake turbulence of a 757 in front of us about a year ago.

In the Turbo Seminole (a twin piper 4 seater) I flew alot this summer, a cylinder head blew out which disabled my left engine. I had to fully shut down the engine and feather it, then make an emergency single engine landing in Madison County Executive airport just north of Huntsville. Defintiely a wierd feeling knowing if i dont make this landing good i am not going to have another chance. In that same airplane, a month later, an oil gasket or something gave out in that same right engine on departure from LZU airport in Atlanta, start bleeding oil all over the place. I immediately requested non-emergency, but priority clearance for immediate return ot the runway. I hated taht plane.. but had to get the multi-engine training. I have also had 2 alternator failures in other aircraft, had to get the airplane on the ground immediatly.. one of them i lost my electric power just as I got down to the ground. Lucky me.

I have never had an Emergancy landing in however many flights i have had (many!), i was once flying with Monatch back from Monastir, and we had a call for a doctor on board. Apparently a woman had had a mild heart attack, we weren't diverted or anything.

I have had a couple of bumpy approaches into BRS, but Nothing to serious, and some heavy turbulence over the English Channel.

During my sixteen years I have had two emergency landings.

THe first was when I was little I was on a TWA 767 from JFK-AMS and an hour into the flight the pilots back up air system was mallfunctioning so we had to turn around and land back at JFK. The wierd thing was a JFK they would not let us off the plane since it was a little problem. The highlight of the flight was four hours into it we were still at the gate having dinner. It was kind of nice because it was not that serious of an accident but it gave us a lot of complementary flyer miles.

The second was a American DC-10 flight from HNL-OGG. THe whells would not go down and the pilot was not sure if they were down so we went back to HNL which of course had the longer runway. Suprisingly only being twelve I was to tired to be scared. Instead I got a good power nap.

Houston Hobby-Tulsa on a South West 732. A drunk guy threatened to kill everyone, believe it or not he was sitting next to me. We landed at Love Field greeted by SWAT.

After takeoff from PVD enroute to CLT on USAir in 1994 we had to turn back because of something to do with an oil problem. I forget.
Last year on august 22 flying from STL to BDL on TWA was the worst turbulence I had ever encountered. You could literally feel the plane riding what felt like huge pockets of air cauzing the plane to drop and rise very rapidly. The F/A's came throughout the cabin to collect everyone's meal's and drinks also which I think alarmed a lot of people. Alot of people were crying which seemed odd to me because after all it's only AIR.

UA 2........ errr i think it was UA230 IAD-SJC, A319, hit some major turbulence coming in. Though technically not an emergency landing, there were alarms going off all over the plane and when we landed they didnt turn off. Walking out on to SJCs tarmac was a relief that day...
