New Airlines To NZ

Fri Apr 20, 2001 7:04 pm

Here in NZ in the year 2000 AKL gained the services of 3 airlines that had never flown here before them China Airlines, Air Tahiti Nui and Air China and EVA Air also reinstated services after a 2 year absence. Air China later pulled out March 01 once again leaving no direct flights from Mainland China. Tourism in NZ is at an alltime high so I was wondering if anybody knew of anymore airlines that are eyeing the NZ market. I think their needs to be direct flights from mainland China. Air NZ's London flights are always full so perhaps another airline to compete on this route Virgin or British Airways? I have heard rumours about Air Canada and Emirates. Anymore anybody knows of. On the other hand CHC has lost afew carriers over the last few years Korean, Thai, British Airways. AKL also lost several in the early 90's Canadian, Continental, Japan, American, British Airways, Air France, UTA, Ansett Australia, China Southwest and now Air China. Not including code shares. Air NZ also dropped afew international routes whilst increasing others. Scott.

Well, interesting you should bring up London because bmi have applied/have already got the right to fly to ALK from LHR. Be good if they flew the route in codeshare with their Star partner, Air NZ...

The current airlines to Auckland are:
AR Aerolineas Argentinas
BR EVA Air
CI China Airlines
CM Canada 3000 Airlines
CV Cargolux
CX Cathay Pacific
FJ Air Pacific
GA Garuda Indonesia
HJ DHL Airways
KE Korean Air
LH Lufthansa Cargo
MH Malaysia Airlines
NF Air Vanuatu
NZ Air New Zealand
PH Polynesian Airlines
PO Polar Air Cargo
QF Qantas
SB Air Caledonie International
SQ Singapore Airlines
TG Thai International
TN Air Tahiti Nui
UA United Airlines
The newest airline is Lufthansa Cargo. I have heard the EK rumour too, and apparently they may make the trans tasman crossing from SYD or MEL in the reasonably near future, instead of leaving their aircraft on the ground in these cities all day. I have also heard that one of the American carriers(CO or AA) may make the journey to Auckland again, but that again was very much a vague rumour.

It would be great to see AA or CO here again I gotta agree there. I also flew on CO back in 87 when I was 4 can't remember anything although I know it was a 747 AKL HNL. Also EZ Evergreen flies 747F's here. I will also add from what I understand most of the Asain carriers are doing puite well here, especially CX and SQ maybe more fights from them? Scott.

I would expect CX to upgrade to 744 again in the future. Singapore are apparently happy with filling the once a day 744, and will not up their frequency for now....

MAS Flights To NZ

Sat Apr 21, 2001 9:19 pm

MAS just decreased their frequency to 5 times weekly from daily services. However, they upgraded their equipment from B777 to B747. There is a little decrease in capacity. Who knows? Maybe MAS is planning to fly daily to AKL daily using B747 but unable to do so now due to shortage of planes? Maybe they will increase the frequency in the Winter schedules.

About Swissair coming in, I think they will rather fly into SYD first rather than AKL.

Cheers.

No. KLM doesn't flies direct into AKL. It flies directly into Kuala Lumpur, then transfers onto a MAS flight into AKL. KLM codeshares with MAS on all of MAS routes to Australia and New Zealand.

ALSO Mandarin Airlines MD-11 comes in about two or three times a week from China.

About Swissair coming here, I would say that it is very unlikely, as the airline is currently struggling to maintain its composure and also I don't think that there is really not much traffic between Switzerland and NZ. But to be quite honest Swissair MD-11 was at AKL airport in late February this year for about four days when it was on its round the world tour, nice looking plane.

Those Mandarin Airlines MD-11s are operated by China Airlines, and they should be from Taiwan via Sydney instead of Mainland China.

Mandarin Airlines has turned domestic, and all of their MD-11s and the single 747-400 are now China Airlines property in return CI have given AE some of their 737-400s, Mandarin has further merged with another domestic airline Smile

With the strong STAR ALLIANCE presence in NZ, i would not look for many new players in Auckland. NZ and UA have the North American market in their control, and Air Canada would only enter this "small" market jointly with NZ. ONEWORLD has Qantas in place, making it unnecessary for large carriers like BA or AA to return to Auckland. I have been to New Zealand 3 times and it is wonderful, but its remote location and relatively small local population make it a difficult destination for international airlines. By the way, in my opinion, NZ has such great service, why would anyone fly to New Zealand with any other airline!

Thanks Dutchjet!!!
Well Qantas is also a very good airline flying to New Zealand, but most people do pick AirNZ first. If you fly between LAX-AKL then you will usually find that they are all full flights. Also between The south Pacific Islands.
You said that there wasn't a big enough market i NZ. Yes you are right there, but they don't need us to fly on there airline. Look at all the tourists coming to NZ!! Their are heaps. That is why most airlines flying here make a profit!!

By the way, CX usually fly a 744 in about every 2weeks!!

CX fly 744's in over the NZ summer but very rarely during the winter if at all which I don't think they do. MAS could use there 2 remaining 744 Combi aircraft to AKL daily, I know they are for sale. I think you would be surprized about how many Swiss tourists come to NZ although I wouldn't expect direct flights to soon if ever. I woulden't say the US market is small in NZ we get 24 non-stops weekly from LAX by NZ, QF, UA all of which are usually full. Scott.

NZ-NBT; MAS B747-Combi

Sun Apr 22, 2001 10:19 am

I have not heard any news about the B747-Combi on sale. Anyway, I think they are losing a B747-Combi for a few months in the summer. There had been change in planes from the B747-Combi to B777 in some routes, i.e. HKG, JNB, CPT and NRT. Normally when the route is served by B747-Combi, it is changed to either normal B747 or B777. I think either they are going for a check-up or refurbishing. Anybody have any idea? They come back sometime in mid-Sept.

And I don't think the B747-Combi have a very nice interior, NZ-NBT. They are one of MAS oldest B747s and had yet to be refurbished, which means no PTVs in Coach Class and bad First Class and Business Class seats and facilities. So I think MAS will rather stick to the 5 weekly services on B747 rather than daily with a mixture of both. Maybe when they get the new B747 later this year and early next year, then MAS will increase their frequency to daily B747. But MAS might use it for other more lucrative routes as well, for example London, Sydney, Melbourne and Hong Kong. (or to Frankfurt and Paris if they get additional rights into these cities)

Cheers.

CX operated a 744 a few weeks back, and sometimes on Chinese New Year, but it is infrequent & definitely not once every 2 weeks.....more like once every 2-4months. The AKL-LAX flights are usually packed...UA & QF were both full when they left for LAX last night, and I would expect the NZ flight that left later was also full. The market into Auckland is not at capacity yet, there is probably room for another 2 airlines....I think someone needs to take on NZ out of Auckland once the airport facilities are updated....and you people that have seen the 'new' airport plans will know that there will be a heap more gates & a second runway to use.

I wonder at times to Mikey but CHC have been losing airlines lately or at least KE. About 2/3 of NZ's population are in the North Island. Not sure about the terminal extention but I know for sure that there are 2 new layover gates to the west of the INT terminal. Next month I think they start extending the INT checkin area. Scott.

Yes CHC has lost most of its airlines over the years, BA, TG, and lets not forget that for a short time SQ gave up its flights there in favour of codesharing with NZ.
Good to know they picked it up again with a year, or else all that woule be left now are QF and Air Pacific. I take, Air pacific still fly twice weekly from Nadi, right?
ALso, NZ over the last ten eyars have quit quit a handeful of non-stop flights out of CHC, to Hobart, Perth, Norfolk Island, and the weekly LA-Honolulu-Nadi-CHC 747 service.
Qantas also flew Cairns-CHC non-stop once.

Air Pacific still flies to CHC. I think CHC will struggle to get many new international carriers in the future because of the market. NON-Stop International flights from CHC now NZ Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Singapore QF Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane SQ Singapore FJ Nadi Scott.

AKL's second runway is NOT presently under construction. All that is being done right now is strengthening of the taxiway to the same strength as the current runway. This taxiway will then be used as the runway, as the current runway is strengthened. As for terminal extensions, I am unaware of any changes that are to be made within the next few years. And as for the second runway, it is tentatively set to open in 2010, provided construction starts on time. However, AIAL (Auckland International Airport Limited) are likely to have hard time getting resource consent for the second runway.

Yes VirginFlyer is correct. the runway will be closed in early October(from memory) and the taxiway will be used ......my advice to all spotters is to come here when that happens... Smile VirginFlyer...do you know any websites/ places to get more information about this new runway business??

No, I got the info regarding the taxiway from some people I know at Domestic Airline Group (Air New Zealand), and the runway thing is what is always put in the AIAL publicity. But as you well know, resource consent in NZ is a pain in the backside. Especially when (no racism intended here, please dont read it as it!) the land is subject to Maori land complaints and environmental issues.

Perhaps there might be something on AIAL's website http://www.auckland-airport.co.nz/, although I have never seen anything much there before. I do have a brochure from 1994, detailing the plans for up to 2010. Furthermore, the model of this is still in the Air New Zealand (make that the only, now!) Domestic Terminal at AKL.

Oh, so that is what they say to the pilots when they fly in. Thanks for the Info....
And yes there is going to be another terminal Update (International Termianal) this year. I read it in the Sunday Herald. If you go to there website you may find something.

Also I think AirNZ should update there Termainal!! It is disgusting.

The username virginflyer reminded me that Virgin Blue hopes to fly to NZ in the next year or two

more transtasman competition

personally I hope to see them take on ADL-AKL as it is currently an "unused" route and Virgin have shown a certain commitment to the ADL market. Their 737-700s could do it easily, perhaps on a Sat/sun rotation initially
