Worst Flight Attendants

Fri Apr 20, 2001 10:04 pm

Hey all,
Just out of curiousity, what airline do you think has the worst flight attendants?

My award goes to Continental. On one flight my parents got into a flight with the FA because my dad ordered a meal without beef and she gave him beef (mind you he hasn't eaten beef in 20 years because of his cholesterol). Another FA came and apologized for the actions of the other FA so that was nice of her. And on another flight, the FAs gave out drinks but didn't come around with a trash bag in time so everyone was holding their cups at landing! Not a huge deal but other airlines would probably not let that happen.

All the airlines I have been on were pretty good, and my next example would not be criticising the airline. This was just out of sheer luck that I got a flight attendant sooo bad on a normally good airline (Ansett)

On Ansett Australia A320-200 VH-HYS, I pushed the flight attendant call button, but as I was in the window seat, I couldn't see out. The old flight attendant stared at me and said to me impatiently "You don't have to press it when I'm just here!!!"
That was so rude, but I still didn't complain.
During the meal, the same FA stared at me when I didn't say please... call me rude... but I thought she really deserved it!!! I'm not going to bother wasting my time saying two words to a flight attendant who criticised me!!
When I didn't say please, she waited till I did and wouldn't give me my food till then.

All my other trips with Ansett were VERY VERY good, and the airline is one of my favourites...

I think at one time or another, I've experienced a "bad" one on each and every carrier that I've flown.

Is it really ever necessary to use the call button other than for emergencies? If the f/a's aren't serving, you can always find at least one or two in the galley. It is much easier just to approach them yourself.

CPDC10-30,
Yes, you create a valid point, but I was at the window seat of an A320 (3-3 configuration), and I had gotten up quite a bit to stretch my legs on the flight, and the people sitting next to me were quite... umm... how do you say it? Obese? But anyhow, I needed to get the flight attendant but the seatbelt sign was on.

I personally have never had a bad experience with any FA. I think this is due to the fact that I respect them, and the work they have to do (i.e. dealing with the traveling public). I have heard FA's being rude to other pax, but only when they are rude to them.

Remember the golden rule, Flight Attendants are here to save you @$$, not kiss it.

I agree with Braniff727 100%. I work in the service industry and when people get snappy with me they get the same right back. Even if it just a simple mistake, the customer does not need to get an attitude. Anyhow, I havent really had any horrible f/a's, just wierd ones. For example on a flight from IAH-HNL, on my way out of the lav. I asked the f/a "Can I have some water please?" and she just stood there staring at me. I could pretty much tell she wanted me to say it in correct english so I said "May I please have a cup of water?" and she was more than happy to give it to me then.

I have never personally had a bad F/A, but I think most of the times it has to do with how you present yourself. You have to realize, that they have a very stressful and unthankful job. How would you feel being ordered around by half a plane full of people?

I find that a simple please and thank you goes a long way. Even a little smile works wonders. Perhaps that's all they needed to make their day.

However....I have experienced F/A's that just plain ignored me on Alitalia. I just figured it was their culture or something, for he was acting all macho and all.

When I came back from Malaga to Gatwick on a A320, Monarch Airlines, at 4am, the f/a were very rude and the food stuck of B.O and looked like something that had just come out of the toilet!!! Yuck!!!!

The only time a FA was rude was when I was flying NO-SEAT to Toronto with Olympic. A FA was angry because me and my mother had to sit in two business seats that were located right after door 1L opposite two FA seats. She told us that no NO-SEAT passenger is gonna sit there. Good thing my mother was a friend from work days with the chief FA and she cleared things up. The bi**h didn't even apologise!

The worst that I have ever experienced were on Air Pacific from LAX to Nadi and back. My partner decided to skip the dinner and go to sleep. This flight attendant kept asking him what he wanted. He kept saying nothing. She wouldn't stop. She asking me to put my seat up..... it was a 10 1/2 hour flight, I think I deserved to have my seat back during the flight.

I've vowed to never fly Air Pacific again... next time I'll take Air New Zealand to Fiji.

My best flight was Britannia from LGW to Zakynthos (greece) and Leisure lgw to Orlando Sanford. They were very nice and the pilot let me sit in the jump seat for the landing for both flights!!

Dear Jrlander,

I understand that the f/a should not have kept asking your father what he wanted to eat, but she had to ask him to put his seat up for the meal service because of the passenger seated behind your father. It's just out of respect that the passenger behind your father have room to eat his meal. Your father could have put his seat back after the meal service for as long as he wanted.

P.S. It may have been the passenger behind your father that asked the f/a to ask your father to put his seat up. I get asked all the time by passengers to ask another passenger to put their seat up for the meal service.

I have to say, I think all airlines have their good and bad FAs. On Delta, which is the airline that I fly on nearly every flight out of here to anywhere, I find that sometimes it is the most senior ones who are the most gruff. Mind you, I always try to make sure I am respectful, smiling, and talking in a cheerful voice. There are some for whom that is just not enough. The worst experience I can think of is between SFO and ATL, when I was in an aisle seat, and leaning on my elbow to get some sleep, every time she would walk by her hips would bump my elbow or arm right off the armrest. And yes, it was not hanging over. . She was not in the best of shape, you could tell just by looking at her face when she was walking up and down the aisle, she was working hard just to walk. I am not trying to disresepct this person, but she did make it an unpleasant flight for me because of her size, she did not fit neatly in the aisle when she walked up and down it.

I disagree with a few comments made in here. Though I do believe that you should respect your flight attendant, I do also believe that I should get what I pay for. I am a member on Continental Onepass and LOVE IT!!!! I respect them and they deliver great service.

I don't care if a flight attendant is there ONLY to save my butt.... I believe customers should get what they pay for but they shouldn't abuse the provider either. A flight attendants job is safety first. I agree. To save the passengers. Her job also includes providing customer service. I remember many complaints from pax's towards United because of the save you/not serve you attitude they were having. To me, the best flight attendants are the one who have had the worst, stressful day possible, flight after flight, and yet when I board the airplane, she/he treats me as if I am their only passenger and make me feel that they are glad that I've chosen to fly with them. These are truely great flight attendants.

Anyway..

mmmmmm...

let me think...

I'm not going to say Iberia... & that's because of a really nice guy on this forum who'll say "of course he had to say that!!!" after read it... with Iberia it was the second worst experience (by the way) but I hope they're improving so fast (because of you Ibe1258 of course!!!).

My worst experience was in a flight with American Airlines between Miami and Washington National Airport (now Ronald Reagan)... I went to the toilet and when I wanted to sit in my seat again the flight attendant said "you must stay over there waiting" in a very rude manner... That doesn't mean AA is always in that kind of treatment with passengers of course, but it was my experience.

My best experiences?... with SIA, KLM, COPA, United & Mexicana... all international flights... all of them great (but the best was SIA).

You kept saying "SHE as in for the Flight attendant, you know there is such a think as a Male Flight Attendant!!

I haven't really had a bad flight, but i did have a rude Flight attendant before take off. I POLITELY asked the flight attendant what movies were showing on the flight she snatched the book out of my hand and pointed to two random movies. (They weren't the movies showing!!), but it was great as she came back after we had taken of and apologised for being so rude!! She also showed me the correct movies showing!!
This flight was SEL-AKL, Korean Air. But i still recommended them to everyone!! They are a great airline!!
I think she snapped because she was doing here pre-flight safety checks, and she needed to get them done fast!!

Alitalia has some of the rudest, indifferent, and stuck up flight attendants I have ever encountered. I also
think they are pretty snotty on BA, but to a lesser
extent. US Airways has unpleasant ones too.

Thanks, WiLdmanVzla
Can you send me your mail, please?
The worst that I have ever experienced was onboard a FOKKER 50 operated by Denim Air on behalf Air Nostrum, from MAH to BCN.
I was flying non-rev(with and ID90). When I fly non-rev I never ask for anything to the F/A's. But I had a horrible headache and I asked for a glass of water in order to take an aspirine . The two F/A's were two young girls that were playing a game called "being a hostess". I press the call button and the youngest one came to me. I asked her for the glass of water and she said that we were going to land in few minutes and that it was impossible. I got shocked because the flight MAH-BCN, when operated by a turboprop last for an hour. I pressed the start button of the chrono of my watch. WHen We finally landed I looked at my watch. 18 minutes since the moment I asked her the glass of water. When I wake from my seat and I went to the door, I said to her:" This has been the slowest and longest landing of my life. Thanks for the water".
Then, one day, not so long time after that, she appeared in my the tickett ofice were I work asking for an ID ticket. It was 20:58 and we close at 21:00. I told her that we were going to close in TWO minutes and that issuing and ID ticket was so much more difficult than provide a passenger with a glass of water.
That was my revenge

IBE1238, that was brilliant! Thanks to most of you for recognizing that not all f/a's are from hell and understanding that most of us are doing our jobs.
The Bitch of the thread award goes out to the one who would not walk to the galley to get a pax a glass of water. However, had it been when they were on final approach and the f/a's were in their jumpseats I would understand, safety would not permit them to get up.

Now I have to have a little moan about some of the misconceptions of some of you. Firstly, I really don't think that flight attendants get out of bed and say " I'm going to piss someone off today, I am going to make their flight hell." Most of the time f/a's are doing their jobs and it is not always easy telling people 20 different rules prioir to take off, but folks cut us some slack please.

Believe me, there is always someone who has an attitude like "I paid for this seat and I bought your services for so many hours" or " I paid and now you will kiss my ass, do what I say or you will get fired". Hard to believe but VERY TRUE. It happens all the time.

If passengers don't get their special dietary request, blame it on the caterer or your travel agent who put the order in too late. If all that is available is beef, work around it. I hate it when a pax blames me, I give up my meal (and still have to work 8 hours hungry) . Lots or times such pax get off the aircraft and don't even look at you or say thank you for giving up your meal for me.

OR if the seatbelt sign is on during turbulence....all of a sudden somone will get up and tell you that if you don't let them in the lav they are going to pee their pants. These people are not kids, they are adults. MEANWHILE...I feel like saying, "go ahead buddy, I have had to pee for the last 4 hours, but I haven't had a chance because I have been running my ass off for you"! Believe it it's true, I had one on my flight last night.

Last one, QuantasAirways, give me a break, what's with the old thing? Sure let's face it most men don't want an older f/a serving them, but it's not an Austin Powers movie, like "bring on the sexy stews". I work with lots of older or heavier female and male f/a's and they are great! Remember the next time your call bell does not get answered is probably because the young f/a is in the lav fixing her make-up or in the flight deck flirting with the pilots...the old one probably had to leave her/his section to answer your call bell!

The United Airlines Flight Attendents are really *itchy to teenagers. I went on a PHIL-LAX flight and It seemed as if they were treating the "washington dc tourists" from middle school really bad, but treated the other "adult" passengers really nicely. The students were really polite too. Well i prefer United Shuttle over United Airlines.

Terrible AA FAs

Sat Apr 21, 2001 1:06 pm

Well, for me, the award goes to AA. I was flying from MIA to JFK on AA in J class, and I just hate one of the flight attendant so much who was serving J class. I think she was trying to let all those businessmen in J class know that she is still "single" and is ready for a date at anytime. She stood beside me for more than 30 mins and kept on socializing with one of a young professional, and totally ignored me. She looks like in her late 30s, and guess what, she mentioned that she's still single so loud and I guess all of the ppl sitting in J class can hear her. The worse thing is that her other collegue in J class is pregnant, and was so busy running around serving us. I just wanted to slap that B**ch so much!

Nope, never had any. Once used the call button to call an FA over to have her throw something out for me and from what I just read above, I am surprised that she wasn't angry, but instead wore a smile on her face and came to my seat to take what I wanted her to take to throw out nicely and courteously.

Must be respectful of them understand how stressful their job is by having to serve half of the plane without any gratitude in return. Don't have to suck up to them, but say "please" and "thank you" and be polite and grateful and appreciative and they will return your kindness.

Well done Mikey!!!
Your right about the flight attendant being in a hurry.
I think that the reason some flight attendants are easily irritated is because of irritable passengers...
I also find that mostly Asian Airlines have nicer flight attendants (in my perspective) eg. Singapore Airlines, EVA Air.

Some FAs are just so rude to passengers, and I guess AA just has more of these FAs than most other airlines...isn't that what ppl voted on the survey?  Smile Afterall, I don't care that much about attentions, all I want is a quiet J class to travel on so I can relax. Wait, I take back what I said about never encountering a rude f/a. When I flew IAH-SFO (in BusinessFirst) last christmas we were told we could board the plane (the BusinessFirst cabin was not prepared) so we did. Well we hopped in our seats and right away this witch says real loud "who let them come up here" and walked over to us demanding to see our boarding passes, well we showed her and she just kinda grunted and went back to loading the movies for the flight. She was being rude to all her fellow coworkers also, she practically yelled at another worker cause she thought he brought the wrong movies for the flight (it was her who obviously didnt have any geographical knowledge, or obviously had no clue where the plane was going). Anyways, I was so happy to see her leave. I felt bad for the passengers in the cabin she was working in. She is the type that deserves to be slapped, Im sure alot of her coworkers wanted to slap her too. She had nothing but snide comments coming out of her mouth from the time we first encoutered her til the time she left the cabin.

CAETravlr, I've had exactly the same experience on a Delta flight between ARN and JFK. The FA (maybe the same one as you had an encounter with) was so fat that she knocked my shoulder when she was walking by.

Maybe I have wide shoulders (muscles, no fat), but this particular FA must have been like 300 lbs. I was so disgusted that I almost couldn't eat my meals because of this mountain of walking lard.

It was Futura. I was flying from Teesside (England) to Reus (Spain) They didn't speak a lot, probably because they are Spanish, and they weren't good at the safety thing. They also gave me way to many bread rolls.

I remember one time on a flight from ORD-BOS on a UA DC-10 the F/A's served a small meal and then diappeared into the galley. After sitting there with my empty food tray for most of the flight, I noticed we were beginning our descent. So with no F/A's in sight, I took my tray to the galley and handed it to one of the F/A's who had been chatting up a storm amongst themselves. I got back to my seat and noticed that we were already quite low and the flaps were being extended. Still no F/A's to pick up the trays, nor none to be seen. Then the gear was extended and the captain made the announcement that we are on final for BOS and that we will be on the ground momentarily. You should have seen those F/A's flying out of the galley! They were trying to pick up the food trays as fast as possible.
Finally they realized that they weren't going to make it, so they told everyone to put their trays on the floor under their seats and to put up the tray table immediately! I think that the last F/A got to her seat and buckled in just as the wheels touched the ground!
I believe that I am very well mannered with F/A's always saying please and thank you. Some are very nice, but others can be quite snippy and rude. I wonder how many air rage incidents have begun because of the behaviour of rude F/A's?

I think that if you should read your post again you will notice how silly you have been.
Can you explain me what's the relationship between not to speak a lot and being Spanish.
If a crew it's not very talkative, perhaps it's is due to the kind of passengers onboard their planes.
Please answer me

Ps.: you were on a Spanish plane going to Spain. Should they speak English?
I have flown Britannia from Barcelona to London and no member of the crew was able to utter a single word in Spanish.

Rootsgurl,
thanks for spelling Qantas the wrong way.
I have absolutely NOTHING against oldER flight attendants, but I am just saying that the ones I have experienced were bad compared to the younger ones on Asian carriers. I would be more than happy to be served by an olderER flight attendant as long as they served me well, I am a paying customer afterall, and they are here for mainly our safety and service/comfort.

IMHO If there weren't so many safety restrictions on air travel, there would be no Flight Attendants. Galleys would be replaced by vending machines.

I think most people here are forgetting that these people are trained for several weeks, not on how to serve ungrateful passengers, rather how to save their lives in an emergency. Flight attendants are underpaid and over stressed. They are treated like dirt and are asked unreasonable demands.

Service is important, but keep one thing in mind. If you act they way you do on a plane in a restaurant, would you be served, or removed from the premesis?

Think about it before you complain.

I've done enough travelling to realize that F/A are there primarily for inflight SERVICE...not to save my ass in an emergency (when in all likelihood all they will see is my ass going out the door).

I disagree whole heartedly. When you purchase a ticket on an airline, you are paying for transportation. Nowhere on the ticket does it say anything about service being included in your fare. That makes inflight service a LUXURY.

Personally, I would like to see airlines charge for inflight service, then anyone could complain about bad service, if they pay for it. Besides, if you don't like the service you get, bring your own service items and serve yourself!

Never had bad flight attendents ever!
For me, though, the best were on Spanair, they were very helpful and great at English. Also the FA's on BD were great also.
When you hear the noise of the Tartan Army Boys, we'll be coming down the road!

I just flew American Airlines JFK to SJU the flight attendants were shocking, very very rude to passengers and where more concerned with conducting private sex life and off dute shopping conversations over the food cart than actually doing something "like work", the threw the meal trays down without any disregard as to wether you actually wanted something or not and this was all after we had an aircraft change three times in a row and three gate changes, no opology was offered at all. Just when I thought they are the worst FAs I flew with them from Miami to EZE and the Buenos Aires based FAs where fantastic, very friendly very well groomed very professional, and the new aircraft a 777 was fantastic. I then took QF from EZE to SYD, the FAs where young and very friendly but the leg room was the worst I have ever experienced on any airline and the inflight product was appauling, it must be very embarrassing for those FAs because they are doing a good job.
Regards.

I think some of us have a lot of expectations (many wrong) from carriers and their staff. Airlines primarily exist to take us from one destination to another. The Food that they serve on board is an Extra and must be treated as such. The problem is that most passengers have begun treating these Extras as their "Right".

i read in a book that the primary role of an FA was similar to a "domestic servant". I think its wrong on our (passenger's) part to interpret this definition literally as some of us do.

I think that most FA's do a pretty decent job considering the schedule that they have to put up with. We as passengers have to be understanding.

The first category of passengers are the finger snapping brigade. There are typically a couple of them on every domestic flight i have been on. I think this is pretty rude by any account. No educated person is going to like this kind of behaviour.

Then there are passengers who, though they mave eaten their fill on at the airport or on previous flights still behave like hungry wolves on board.

On one flight that i was on, there was this European passenger in the seat beside me. On the first 1 hr segment the FA's served a full meal. But inspite of having hogged to his hearts content on this segment, he was still not satiisfied! 'cos after the flight took off for its second 1 hr segment after a 40 minute halt, this guy was pulling down the table and putting on his napkin as soon as the smell from the aircraft ovens reached us. And he argued with the FA about "rotten service" becuase they had run out of non-veg meals! I personally thought that this behaviour was atrocious and petty. But imagine, the FA's must be having to put up with this everyday!

THere r Good and Bad in every industry, but i dont htink it is fair to label an FA as "bad" just because she doesnt come when Your Highness snaps his fingers. As long as she is doing her duty of keeping things onboard in order then i think all is fine.

Definitely: American Airlines: Never had such rough FAs on an international flight (LHR-LAX).
