Question On Runways

Sat Apr 21, 2001 2:22 am

I just found out that both runways of the new airport ELEFTHERIOS VENIZELOS in Athens are 45m wide! They seem very narrow comparing to most airports in the world and the 60m runway in the old airport. Arent most of the runways of Intl. airports 60m wide? Wont there be a problem for large aircraft like the A330/A340, 747, 777 or even the A380 because of the size and the wingspan?

Aren't the international standard 45 m? Atleast I think GOT has 45 m wide runway and we can handle all now flying aircrafts.
But which airport has 60 m wide RWY? I haven't heard of any that does.

Many airports have 60m wide runways, but there is no problem operating 747's from 45m wide runways, it is a common practice.

150' (~45 M) is pretty standard at many airports around the world. In Canada, we give an extra 50' (~15 M) so we can pile up the snow.
