What Will US Airways Replace Its Shuttle 727s With

Wed May 19, 1999 1:01 pm

In "USA Today", in an article about US Airways decision to slow the growth of Metrojet because of a shortage of aircraft and trained pilots, They mentioned that the airlines problems stem from its plans to retire its shuttle 727s. Does anyone know what they are planning to replace the shuttle 727s with? will they use 7373s or perhaps 7374s from the mainline? or will they use their new airbus planes? You can find the story at this URL:

U.S Airways will probally start to use there Boeing 737-300 / 737-400 for metrojet when they get more Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft as they get more of the Airbus aircraft they will start to replace them on the routes the 737-300's and 737-400's fly on and put the 737-300 / 737-400 aircraft on MetroJet routes. I really doubt they will use new Airbus aircraft.

U.S Airways could always order the Airbus A318 for MetroJet, I think they should.

I personally think they should transfer their MD-80s to Shuttle.

I think the F100 would be good on those short routes. The planes aren't THAT old, and USAir has quite a few of them. Or how about their 737-200's?? They are older and they can replace them with the new 'Bus models for the mainline routes.

I think that they'll replace them with either MD-80's or B737-400's, one of these two types. This is what's gonna happen at US Airways:
-the mainline domestic fleet will consist of A319, A320, B757, B767 for long transcon flights and F100 (the majority of the fleet will be Airbus).
-the mainline international fleet will consist of A330
-the Metrojet fleet will consist of only B737's (the 200's should be phased out soon so it will consist of 300's and 400's)
-the Shuttle fleet will consist of what I said above
-the DC-9's and 727's will be gone

I really hate to see the 727s go. I don't understand why they are painting them in new colors if they are going to dump them. I saw N918TS in new colors last Saturday. I think the MD-80s would be good replacements. I read several years ago that they were going to get rid of the MD-80s, but they are still here. I would like to see them with the leather seats and increased legroom of the current Shuttle aircraft.

US Airways Vs Delta

I think Delta is going to keep the 727's a little longer than US Airways. I also hate to see 727's go away, it's sad isn't it? If I have to fly from LGA to DCA or BOS I would choose, if the fare is the same, Delta over US Airways just because it's a 727.

So would I. The only reason I fly the US Airways Shuttle now is because it uses Eastern aircraft. After they are gone, I'll have no reason to fly them anymore. I'll stick to Delta 727s. Their Shuttle is nicer anyway.
