Boeing 747 Upper-Deck Capacity?

Sun Apr 22, 2001 11:36 am

Having never (unfortunately) been on board the great B747 jetliner, I was curious as to the upper-deck configurations of these Jumbos.
Do the new -400's still have the bar & lounge areas; or is it all just first-class seating?
Are the older -100 and -200s still in their original 1970's upper-deck configurations, with just a few seats in a lounge?
And: How's the ride when seated in an upper-deck seat? Pretty cool, I'll bet!

I was on a BA 747-400 in 1994. I was curious when I boarded the plane so I ran right up the spiral staircase (just to take a peek). When I got up there, I saw some leather seats and a galley. No lounge.

I had the pleasure of flying in the upper deck of a United 747-400 from Chicago to Tokyo a few years had 10 or 12 rows of 4 across biz class seating. Same with the British Airways -400 upper deck I've been in. Also been in a United 747-200 upper deck, if I recall correctly, it was 4 rows of 4 across (biz seating).

JAL has a 747 configuration so that the economy class is on the upper deck. On a flight a few years ago from LAX-KIX, I got to sit up there! No bar and no lounge, but it is really cool up there! It is a little quieter for me.

I know that the top deck of a 747-400 has 69 seats up there with a possible 3 x 3 configuration. It may be 2 x 2 but I think it's 3 x 3 when I was on the 747-400. And it's usually Business. The First Class is in the front behind the nose, and behind them is economy. Then up above is Business.

My posts/replies are strictly my opinion and not that of any company, organization, or Southwest Airlines.

I have heard tale of the lounge in the upper deck. Does anyone know when these lounges were removed, and if any airline still has them?

America West - Check your facts. The 747-400 does not have a spiral staircase but rather the standard type at door 2L.

Boeing has certified the capacity of the upper deck in the following manner :

741, 742 : 50 passengers
742SUD : 120 passengers
743, 744 : 100 passengers

This is due to emergency exit requirements. However, I don't believe that any airline has more than 70 seats upstairs.

Also, those numbers are rough estimates. I don't have my Boeing manuals with me right now.

Airlines use the upper deck for different classes.

LH has its first class up there:

742: 8 seats
744: 16 seats

I flew on a BA 742 from ORD-LHR two years ago, and was lucky enough to be seated on the upper deck. It was six abreast economy seating, but I can tell you it was much better than the economy section on the first floor, which I experienced LHR- ORD three weeks earlier.

On BA 747-400 there are 32 Club Class seats in a 2x2 config. With the new sleeper seats there are 20 in a 2x2 config.

On the 747-200 there are 32 economy seats. Some originally had Club Class and that was 8 seats.

Passengers ask to sit up there as its quieter and not as busy. Nice if you can!

747-400 Aircrafts don't have spiral staircases up to the upper deck.
Their staircase is straight up.

I've been seated on the upper deck on VS's fondly-remembered "Spirit of Sir Freddie". The seating was 2-2, with either 8 or 12 total (I don't recall). My favorite recollection is that after the safety demonstration, the FA on the upper deck came and told each of us that since the upper deck only had one door, our second emergency exit was down a rope ladder from the cockpit window!

I was in a Qantas 747-SP upperdeck which had only 12 seats all up. But that was Business Class seating. 2 x 2 seating.

United has a 2 x 2 business class configuration on top. Business is on the upper and lower levels, with the upper deck previously used as the smoking section. First Class is on the lower level.
An interesting feature is that there are no overhead bins up there. The bins are on the floor between the seats and the windows, thus the seats are further away from the windows.

UnitedIAD, you must be talking about the 747-200, because there are plenty of overhead bins on the upper deck of the -400...
