What Airliner Features The Smoothest Landings?

Sun Apr 22, 2001 8:07 pm

What do ya think?
Which plane is the least bumpy on touchdown? Or is there a significant difference between types?
What's the roughest?

I've heard that the BAe146 produces velvety-smooth landings.....due to the landing gear configuration, which evidently results in less jarring touchdowns. Is this true?

The one with either the most effective autoland or the most proficient crew, aided and abetted by perfect conditions, tyres properly inflated with the oleos in tip top condition and hydraulics at required optimums.

Such an aircraft should be landed on a perfectly smooth runway and should have perfect seat bottom cushions and overhead bins that don't rattle, galley carts that lock perfectly in place and no passengers who scream at the slightest noise.

The 146 does have some very gentle charecteristics due to the high wing, the position of the main gear, the air brake in the tail and a slow landing speed but I've had some dog rough landings in them in cross winds and the configuration is similar in the C141, C5, AN124 etc.

There is no answer to this question as there are too many uncontrollable variables

All aircraft can produce "the perfect landing" in the right conditions. Although bigger jets are generally generate smoother landings IMHO (probably due to Bigger landing gear, bigger aircraft, more experienced crew, less likely to be effected by weather etc etc).

I agree with PhilB, but just for the record, the smootest landing I have had was on an L1011 Tristar at MAN. And the roughest, on an MD83 @ NCL.

Worst

Sun Apr 22, 2001 11:39 pm

Well, in my experience, the worst was a 727. And I talked to a captain who has flown 727s, but is now in 737s, and he says that 27's are notoriously difficult to land.

I also had a lot of rough landings in Super 80s, but one tthing about them is that as soon as the spoilers come up, they STICK on the ground.

The WORST I ever had was a 767 (AA) that bounced multiple times, at least four, and was very unsettling.

The best has been DC-10s and MD-11s.

From personal experience and from observation my vote goes to the A340.

well

it always varies

but the worst landing i've had was in a 757-200

the approach was really fast and we kinda slammed into the ground.

nothing really severe but out of the ordinary

I guess that it mostly depends on the pilot  Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

Over and over again, the best landings I've had were on the A340. It has always been so smooth I didn't even know we had landed!

My worst landing was on a Cathay Pacific 777-300. There was this large creaking sound and lots of bumps.

I had a pretty nice landing on an AirTran 717. The approach into Savannah was really rough but I never felt it touchdown.

I have to agree that the A340 seems to be the smoothest on landing. The first time I was on one, I was so excited to be going to Europe, I didn't even realize we had already touched down.

The worst I would say are DC9's, maybe it has something to do with thier age, but they have always seemed extremly stiff to me.

I have to say overall the best landings go to airtran's DC-9 guys, almost always a greaser and never disapointed, also, to SR on their a-320s.

Well, I had flew quite alot of times and all seems to be depend on the weather and pilots.

There been time that DC-9 and 737-200 had made alot of smoothest landing and roughest landing.

Had real a nice landing with 767-400 but I rode that once.

It all depends on the pilots. Three of my four AirTran flights were smooth, but the one DC-9 was an interesting landing. I overheard an F/A say that our captain was an ex-NAVY fighter pilot, and they are trained to land hard, fast, and slow down quickly. Sure enough, that landing was bumpy and rough, but the plane didn't bounce back up at all.

I liked landing in Tu-154 and IL-86.

Heres the thing. I fly Lufthansa quite a bit to and from FRA and LAX. On their 744's. The smoothest landings I have ever experienced are on them. Maybe Germans just know how to fly planes! Great landings. Also, once, on a continental flight, many years back, it was an MD-80. The captain was really good. My sister is a light sleeper, and was trying to sleep before takeoff, and we had already taken off, and she had no idea! It was a really quiet takeoff, I didnt even know we were taking off till we lifted up. The landing on the same flight was really smooth, amazing. Also, on a Lufthansa A300, I fell asleep before we took off, and woke up 2 hours into the flight. I was dissapointed I missed the takeoff though  Sad.

Shouldnt this be a question of rather who is the best crew and weather conditions put together. I'm telling you, its NOT the aircraft that creates the smoothest landing its the crew and how they perform it. A Cessna 421 can have a smooth landing with gear down, and have an even smoother one with the gear up. Yes you saw that right. And I have heard of a story where this was in fact true. The pilot of course didnt know the gear was still up, so he wasnt panicing at all.

Checklist anyone..........
