Delta's Name?

Mon Apr 23, 2001 10:16 am

Why doesn't Delta spell Airlines like every other airline: Airlines. They have to spell it Air Lines. Thats always been a wonder.

I don't think anybody knows. However, they have totally discarded the 'Air Lines' out of their name with the introduction of their new paint scheme. Their reasoning was that customers more commonly refer to them as just 'Delta' than 'Delta Air Lines.'

Actually we are still Delta Air Lines, Inc.

Our brand image now reflects the company name as Delta.

But when you refer to the company by its full name it is Delta Air Lines. I like it, as it is a throwback to the days when most airlines had the word "airlines" written as two words. I even find it somewhat annoying when people get it wrong and write Delta Airlines.

Similarly, the old giant neon sign on the side of United's SFO Maintenance Operations Center building has "UNITED AIR LINES" written on it.

It's a new day. Every moment matters. Now, more than ever.

Thanks for the correction DeltaSFO. I just remember reading something that said Delta Air Lines had changed it's name to just plain 'Delta' because of the passenger thing. So it was just the brand name image that was changed.

BTW, 'Delta Air Lines' does look better when written than does 'Delta Airlines'.

Delta Air Lines looks classier than Delta Airlines, but I feel Continental Airlines looks better than Continental Air Lines.

I don't know, it's a matter of personal taste I guess.

Classier! That is what I was trying to say. I couldn't think of the word though. Delta Air Lines looks classier than just Delta Airlines.

Whether 'Air Lines' or 'Airlines' looks better I beleive would depend on what is in front of them. Shorter, 1, 2, or 3 syllable words seem to fit fine in front of Air Lines. After that it just seems to make the name excessively long.

I agree, Delta Air Lines looks better when written!
