Noisiest Plane At Your Local Airport

Mon Apr 23, 2001 12:30 pm

If if you live near an airport you probably have some problems with the noise of those old planes taking off and landing.
Here in Vitoria, Brazil, Varig and Vasp operate B737-200 and TAM F-100s. I can´t stand the "quake" from VP 737´s. They really bother me. But now I´m dealing with my nithmare..... There is a Varig Log 727-100F that struggels the air with its bizarre sound.. Goshhh!!!1 I wish RG and VP replace this planes for newer ones such as 737-300/400 from TRANSBRASIL. They are so quiet compare to others... What are the worst ones at your airport?

At my local airport, it is probably the few T-6 Texans based here. I love waking up to those things rumbling over my house in formation at a few hundred feet AGL.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

At Singapore Changi Airport, the noisiest regular visitor has definitely got to be the Boeing 737-200B of Bouraq Indonesian Airlines!!! The explosive crackling noise makes the air vibrate from the moment it rolls to rotate and climb out.

The biggest complaints at DEN have to be the 737-200s of United, Frontier, and Vanguard (there may be others).

Without a question, the IL-62M. The only airline flying it now I believe to YYZ is Air Ukraine...Aeroflot and Cubana used to fly them here as well.

The noisiest thing at SJC are Horizon's F28's. Noisy little guys! I love 'em.

Hard to say... I guess either the Horizon F28 or NWA DC10s. Or maybe the BA 742...

I'm an indecisive person.

my local airport (PNQ) is actually an airforce base. So the loudest aircraft coming in are fighters/bombers like Mig-29's, Sukhoi-30's and a couple of Jaguar-IM's. Among military transports, there r the Il-76 which is loud, but considering its size i guess its less noisy than the An-32's which rattle your brains out. I once had the misfortune of standing on the military apron while an An-32 was being started. THat was definitely not an experience to be repeated!

The loudest civilian aircraft are the 737-200 which is quite regular. Sometimes we get Cargo 727's here which are even noisier!

I don't know too much about IL planes, but I guess the noisiest at YYZ should be the DC-9s and 727 besides IL planes mentioned by CPDC-10-30. At YHM, the noisiest should be 727 and DC-9 too.

Noise is hard to find at CLK as anything that is noisy is banned !!.

For us its the China Northern MD-80's or the -100/200 freighters with the JT9's !!

I work at HNL and HA and AQ still fly the old DC 9's and 737's, those are fairly noisy.
Because HNL and Hickam AFB share the same runways the military traffic is much louder. The Air guards F-15's they're usually as loud as HA's DC 9's unless they have afterburners on. The ocassional B1 or U2 are also pretty loud.
The miltary stopped flying the old KC-135's out of HNL a few years back. The ones with the old meth-mix injected engines were deafening but cool to watch. I remember their long take off rolls and all that black smoke, they wouldn't rotate untill they were going really fast, after that it was a slow shallow climb out.

At RDU I am going to say the 737-200. Several airlines fly them here but I always seem to notice Delta Express on take off. Next is the DC-9 by Northwest followed by the 727 by American.

Everyday we have the Fokker F.28-4000 making all the noise here with the RR Speys. On very regular visits we have the RAAF F/A-18s stirring up the city. At the moment though we have numerous C-5 Galaxys from Travis AFB here making the most noise.

Oh and for helicopters we have the CH-4 Chinook creating a bit of window shaking.  Big grin

Well, I live closest to BUR (Burbank), and I can't tell what kind of plane it is (Jetstream Possibly), but it is noisy as all hell. And since they're private they often fly in at really awful hours like 11:30pm. As for commercial planes, I occasionally here Southwest 737s but the landing approach is a little farther north and I fortunately avoid the noise for the most part.

At Detroit DTW, we have Northwest's huge fleet of DC-9s and remaining 727s that are extremely noisy. A few other airlines still fly 727s regularly too like United, American, ATA and Allegro Air

At BOS, it would probably be one of the DC-8s or 727-100s that fly in here with UPS, FedEx, Airborne Express, etc. For pax, I would have to say the DC9. I flew on a 732 last Sunday right next to the engine, and it was not that bad.

At OST (where I study):

Ilyushin 76 (Various Russian Operators)
Boeing 707 (Air Memphis, Kay Aviation)
Douglas DC-8 (African International)

At LGG (where I live):

Boeing 727 (TNT Airways)
Douglas DC-8 (Cargo Lion)

Best regards,

DellaTorre,
If if you live near an airport you probably have some problems with the noise of those old planes taking off and landing.

Well, never been a problem for me! Like many of us love the sound of any type of older model aircraft and it is music to us. All newer model like 737NG, 717, A320's, seems to be like something about reality of aviation is missing.

Very well said Western737!

An aircraft is supposed to make noise. What do you expect? In case of a 747, its almost a MILLION POUNDS that's going up! You can't do something like that without making some noise! And if you don't like it, go live somewhere else!

Best regards,
GR.

I think due to SFO's strict noise rules, the loudest planes are usually the 737-200's flown by Southwest and Air Canada (ex-Canadian) and the 727-200's from Delta and United.

However, they are being phased out, so within a few years they'll all be switched over to 737-700/800 models and A319/A320 models.

The loudest airplane at my home base is a Hawker Siddley HS125-600 with the RR Vipers. That little demon makes quite a nice racket on take-off. And To me its not noise it is music...

At YEG, the noisiest passenger jet aircraft are usually the Fokker F28s flown by Air Canada Regional (don't be fooled by the Canadian Regional titles on them!) and Horizon Air. The 737-200s used by WestJet, Air Canada and Royal/C3 are also very, very loud even though they are hushkitted to meet Stage III noise regulations. The F28s flown by AC aren't even hushkitted, BTW. This is due to a weight category that allows them to be exempt from any mandatory hushkitting.

The 727's get pretty loud at LAX. But to me, the louder, the better.

When PSA was around, their 727's and DC-9's were always extremely loud during take off.

The noisiest I've ever seen in Brussels was a B707; although the TU-154's I see aren't that quiet... I live 6km from Brussels Airport and it really is bad at night... Than DHL operates their B727's and A300 freighters... But, now they begin to use B757's (ex-BA). But it stays difficult to sleep with them...
Sorry to say...

Tired regards,

These noisiest planes @ ATL are as followed:

DC-9 (AirTran, Northwest, and Southeast)
737-200 (Delta, AirTran, Vanguard, Metrojet, and US Airways)
727 (Delta, United, American, Northwest)
EMB-120 (ASA) Those little suckers are loud.

(But I can say that one of the quietest planes operates out of ATL also. AirTran and TWA's (American) 717s)

All of the cargo birds sound loud because when one of those take off, there's not any other flights taking off at that time of the night, so the noise doesn't get muffled by all of the other planes.

Soon to be again the BA and AF Concorde flights. I only live 2.5 miles from JFKs runway 22L for arrivals. And when that Concorde came in 3 times a day, my apartment shook like an earthquake. But it never failed, if I was home and not on a trip, I always ran to the window and checked it out. Right now the noisest are the DC8 cargos and the 747's.

At DEN, the noisiest ones are An-124, C-5's (yes, sometimes they land there too) 737-200's and DC-8's. We also have some un-hushkitted 727's of Fedex and United and some other carriers. Fighter planes from Buckley Airbase make lots of noise too.

The Noisiest at my local airport (YSJ) would have to be the Canadian Regional (now Air Canada Regional) F-28's. There are also CanJet 737-200's but they will not operate here after the end of April

I mentioned DTW but I should mention another Detroit area airport that is used for all charter and cargo and corporate Willow Run YIP

There are plenty of unhushkitted 727s there flown by various companies such as Kitty Hawk, Air Jet, Express One etc.

There are the DC-9s flown fly USAJet and Kitty Hawk.

Then there are all those unhushkitted DC-8 50s and 60s of Zantop, Trans Continental, several ex Kalitta/Kitty Hawk International.

Zantop has a bunch of noisy old Electra turboprops and Kalitta Flying Services has those shrill sounding Volpairliners- (turboprop Beech18).

There are even a couple DC-6s that fly out of there still and a DHC-4 Caribou.

There is a B-17, C47, and B-25 from the Yankee Airforce Museum on the premises that fly a lot around Memorial DAy and thru out the summer.

The loudest planes though I think are the Sabrejets, the Kalitta Lear Jets and the USA Jet Falcons.

I never knew NASA had 707s at CLE. When are they used? Otherwise, in my opinion, the top three loudest planes are as follows in order from quietest to loudest:
3. Southwest and Metrojet Boeing 737-200s
2. Assorted airlines' DC-9s or MD-80s
1. Grand Bahama Island, Northwest, and United Boeing 727-200s. The Island plane seems as if it doesn't have those sound mufflers on it (I can't think of what those things are called right now, but I always do know).
I've never heard anything larger than a 757-200 take off, so in general, are the widebodies louder or are they quieter?
