AZ 742s are old. Some average 20 years. The service onboard the planes is horrible. They are old and have horrible inflight entertainment. And AZ as an airline is quite bad.

Thank you Michael SFO for your very interesting and well argued opinion about Alitalia.
AZ B747-243Bs have been delivered between 1980 and 1986. They are currently operating 7 examples plus 2 all cargo. Yes, they are old and with poor inflight entertainment and Alitalia lost the occasion to order the 747-400 10 years ago when it was worth it.
Within a year AZ will begin to receive its B777-200ER and so the renewing of the long haul fleet will finally begin.

Ciao

The 742 aircraft that AZ now has in its fleet are not their originals - as stated, they were acquired in the first half of the 1980s and replace AZ's original examples that were delivered in the early 1970s. They do not have all of the features of some newer airliners, but I have found the service on AZ to be about average, not that much better or worse than any other carrier.

Have AZ dropped flights to Oz?
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

They are old, but clean and reliable. AZ service is not top notch, but not bad either. I have flown thier 742s on MIA-MXP and FCO-MIA, and both times the 742s were clean and fresh. They will be gone soon. 772s are on thier way.

Steman is correct. Alitalia's B747-200 fleet date back to 1980, with the youngest plane having been delivered
in 1986. This is not old for a 742, in fact, this makes the
742's in Alitalia's fleet among the youngest in service.

Alitalia is not a bad airline. Not a good one either. It is
very hit and miss. The airline has an excellent safety
record. Lousy cabin crew who have no interest or any
concept of customer service, but that is what you get
from employees of a state-sponsored company. Alitalia could be a lot better with a fresher image, more professional cabin and ground staff, and a serious foreign partner. Hopefully, the Skyteam will whip this
dinosaur into shape.
