The new a/c are coming as part of a fleet renewal programme. They will replace 4 of the older B742s. The next new destination is LGW-YYZ daily from June 12th. The LGW-LAS service is being increased to 3 per week from June and the LGW-SFO seasonal service returns on June 20th (operating 4 times a week).

Is the SFO going to be served by a 744 as from LHR?

Presumably the 200s to go will be the remaining originals plus G-VJFK and G-VLAX, which will mean saying goodby to some old friends of many hours acquaintnce.

It is indeed time to say goodbye to some old friends. G-VIRG was the first a/c operated by VS almost 17 years ago and has given many years of faithful service. Retirement awaits along with G-VGIN, G-VJFK and G-VLAX.

Hopefully the LGW-SFO service will be operated by one of the 744s. A final decision is awaited........

As G-VIRG is probably coming up to airframe life expiry, I wonder if Richard would consider donating this to a museum? If fully stripped down it should be able to squeeze into Duxford on a ferry flight from LGW.

Are all the new 744s LGW based? I can understand the need to replace the earliest 747s, but what about the RR powered 747s. Are these going to be used still? I am just curious, because I am due to fly EWR-LGW on the 10th June and would prefer to fly on a Classic.

They are still coming, presumably to be based at LHR.

I called VS reservations about my flight on the 10th June and was told that although at present the flight was operated by a 742, the airline was currently getting new 744s and it could well be changed. I was advised to call closer to the date.

(Helpful person; most telephone reservations agents are pretty dull people, not knowing an APU from an Airbus, but I've always found the VS people very helpful.)

In answer to Kaitak's question about the other Classics, they will continue to operate mainly from LGW but also on some flights from LHR as well.

The remaining 2 B744s on order are likely to be based at LHR.

It is good to hear that the first of VS 744s will be arriving tomorrow! I am saddened by the thought of the original gang of 747s retiring though. Maybe a new startup or cargo carrier will pick them up? It will be interesting to see some LGW based 744s and 744s operating VS17 and 18 into and out of my home base (EWR).

Does anybody know what will happen to VS011 and VS012 which opperate to and from Boston, Logan, to London, Gatwick? as they have used the "classic" for as long as i've been flying them (around 15 years on this route) Its a real workhorse for VS and i think it has more charecter than the 744's  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
I hope they keep the 742's but the capacity is usualy pretty high on this route so maybe it will be the 744's on this route too. But come to think of it does Boston alow 744's??? Might be an odd question but i don't tink i've ever seen a 744 there just A340's 777's and 742's?
Am i totaly wrong or what?
Let me know!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
Thanks

VS should put a few of their new B 744s for its HKG-LHR route.

Dan,

VS have used a 744 on the BOS route before albeit for a limited time.

According to a press release on the Virgin website, the new 744s will be used on the LGW to MIA/MCO/EWR/BOS routes. They have a different seating config to the 744s currently operating from LHR.

**Update**

The new a/c are expected to be in service on the following dates:-

G-VGAL 21st May
G-VLIP 13th June
G-VROM 20th June
G-VROY 13th July

There are no plans to operate the HKG route using a B744. However frequencies to HKG are increasing to nine per week from mid August and eleven per week from September.
