Uneven Runways

Thu Apr 26, 2001 9:50 pm

Just seen this pic of BHX, strange that I've been in and out of there over 20 times and never noticed those undulations. Are there any other airports with wildly not-flat runways?

I think very few runways are perfectly flat, at least that I've seen. The runway in Geneva is numped in the middle, so that standing at the end of the runway, the departing aircraft will actually disappear over the horizon, before you see it again after liftoff.

In Zurich, the main takeoff runway is just the reverse - lower in the middle.

Luton is really strange! I don't know if the runway is uneven or not, but from the runway to the terminal / parking position, it really goes downhill!

LBA runway starts off on a hill goes into a dip and then flattens out. It's obviously not a problem as both Concorde and 747s have visited the airport.
I once watched a DC10 take off in front of the plane I was in at Manchester's main runway and it disappeared from sight before reappearing after take off.

McChord AFB, I have noticed, also has a depression towards the middle of 16/34... never really saw that until about a week ago.

Some of the runways in DEN are uneven too.

At least two of the runways at ATL are uneven with the middle part of the runway being a bit of a valley. I believe that it is desirable for some unevenness in a runway, as water will not tend to pool or stand on a sloped runway the way it would on a perfectly flat runway.

Is Courcheval the strip on the side of a mountain? If so I know what you mean about the slope! Nerves of steel needed to land their.

You ought to try Corfu or Heraklion in the Greek Islands - well bumpy - just like Greek roads!

Carlisle Airport (CAX) also has a very short and very uneven runway.

Manchester Rny 24R starts on a slight slope uphill and the flattens out.

It can be quite interesting watching a fully laiden PIA 747 combi strugle up the hill the go shooting of into the distance once it reaches the top!
