AC New Route: MIA-YVR

Fri Apr 27, 2001 10:20 am

Air Canada will be flying a new route, Miami-Vancouver, effective 5 July. I know American tried this route with little fanfare. What does everyone think? I think the timing is right. As a huge fan of both cities, they are in many ways VERY similar, especially in thier strong
modern "Euro style" cultures. Anyone know what aircraft will be used? The flight will be year-round and daily.

They will use A319s!  Smile

Yeah, actually not long ago I was thinking about why no one is offering service between these dities? My brother was thinking of travelling from YVR to MIA in Feb but couldn't find any non-stop services! Here it is!

I know that there were some people from out west on our flight to MIA from YYZ on November 16, 2000, I think that these people were from Edmonton and Calgary. It might be easier to get to YVR from these locations....I don't know. YYZ can be difficult to get around and who know, it might be a better option.

I like the idea, it will relieave some traffic from YYZ

American's MIA-YVR service worked quite well so long as Canadian Airlines was still in business as Canada's
#2 airline because it offered CP feed onto AA flights
from Miami to Latin America and AA feed to CP flights
to Asia.

This route might still work because AA has a bank of
flights to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and other South
American destinations from Miami each day. Air Canada's Star Partner Varig also has a lot of flights
out of Miami.

What is that about a 7 hour flight? Can an A319 do that?

The AC flight (I assume) also has the opportunity to connect with United Airlines' flights to Latin America out of Miami.

I hope AC continues to open up new routes out of YVR, such as more to the Southwestern US.

Actually DL Widget Head, YVR and MIA might be more like at least 5.5-6 hours apart. Going eastbound, yes, an A319 might be able to do that. But it may require a fuel stop in the other direction because of headwinds. Apparently, this seems to happen on the supposedly nonstop YVR-YHZ route and even the YYC-YHZ route, but I'm not too sure.

If the A319's going to be used on that route, I don't know if AC would place stricter baggage and cargo restrictions in order to optimize the range, but then again, I wouldn't be too surprised. Still, it's not a bad way for AC to go as far as transborder routes are concerned.

The Airbus 319 can fly up to 3,700miles according to the Airbus website.
YVR-MIA is 2799miles great circle.

I think the route will do good. It will connect Florida with the Orient with only one-stop as Air Canada has many destinations in the Orient. Also in the summer months there will probably be lots of Alaska cruise ship passengers flying on it to catch the boat in Vancouver. I think AC will use an A320 or A319 on the route.

Boeing764, that's a huge plus with the cruise ships. 99% of Alaskan cruises begin or terminate in Vancouver. Alaska is one of the hottest summer destinations for Miami tourists. Very popular. Although, most Miamians flying to Asia either fly AA's direct MIA-NRT flight (with a stop in SEA) or connect with NW in DTW. None the less, the connections will be an advantage.

You'd think Varig might start-up some service to YVR as well... since they fly constantly to MIA, they could do GIG-YVR with a stop in MIA... this would give good connections from latin america to asia with as many as two stops, only one of which would require a change of planes.... unless Varig continued on to NRT or HKG as well...

I looked on the computer at work today and it shows that the route will be flown by A319's. MIA-YVR will be 6hours 30 minutes block to block and YVR-MIA will be 5h and 45min.
