A320 Assembled In Hamburg?

Sat Apr 28, 2001 2:03 am

Hi everybody,

as you probably know, A318, A319 and A321 planes are assembled at Hamburg, while the A320s are built in Toulouse.

I believe I heard or read somewhere that, due to the fact that Toulouse will get a greater share of the A380 production, a certain percentage of A320s´ production will be shifted to Hamburg, as an appeasement, so to speak.
Is this true? If yes, how many A320 a/c will be built in Hamburg, how many in Toulouse?

Thanks,

Daniel Smile

I think it would be smart for the Hamburg assembly to assemble all the A320 Family planes.

This plan would have two advantages:

1. It makes it far easier to distribute airplane parts--all parts for the A320 Family planes will now go to one final assembly line instead of two. It also means that Hamburg won't have to spend the money to extend the runway at the airport where the assembly line is located because A380 flight activities won't be located there.

2. The Toulouse assembly can use the assembly line floor space opened up from the A320 production being moved out to concentrate on A300/A330/A340/A380 production. This means there will be less pressure to build more assembly line buildings, so costs to upgrade the Toulouse asssembly line to accommodate the A380 will be substantially less.

The people I've talked to at Airbus tell me that all A320 final assembly and deliveries will eventually move to Hamburg. It is not appeasement but contractual, the percentage of work each partner receives. The Finkenwerder delivery center is also supposedly getting a new hangar for customer activities due to the inclement weather..
