B767 At SNA-Orange County

Sat Apr 28, 2001 4:19 am

Are 767's capable of operating in and out of SNA-John Wayne? FedEx already operates a daily cargo A310 flight, obviously meeting noise and runway restrictions. Could the 767 do the same?

Yes, you can operate a 767 to & from SNA. The new terminal has gates which are designed to be able to handle a 767, and the consent agreement regarding flights, available seats, and terminal design was drafted with the 767 as a consideration.

Would there be a weight restriction and how much for a 767?

The FedEx 310 is not nearly full, it has a stop on route also. I highly doubt anyone will fly them in there. Also I doutb the taxiway's are strong enough.

As of a couple of years ago, work was being done to strengthen one of the taxiways to handle the weight of a 767. In fact, that may be the work they're doing on L now. At least a few of the gates have 767 nosewheel markers. Runway 19R is 5700 ft long.. although the landing distance past the touchdown zone on an ILS approach is only 4800 ft. Airport elevation is 54 ft.. and it's known to have the most strict noise abatement procedure in the country.

Without knowing anything about the airport - if someone told me those things and then told me that there are nonstop flights to/from ORD, EWR, and ATL, I wouldn't believe them. Then if they told me that an airline would operate a 767 in there, I'd say they were crazy.

My hunch is the only airline looking forward to 767 service into SNA is UPS. This way they can run them SDF-SNA-LGB-SDF or vice versa. Although with their A300s on the way, there is probably even less of a chance of seeing the widebody at John Wayne. I'd say there's absolutely no chance of getting 767 service from United, Delta, TWA, Continental, or American.. at least until 1L/19R is lengthened.. when an airport at El Toro is out of the cards.
Ask why..

Kohflot, and remember that soon there will be non-stop flights to Hawaii, and also there are some flights to WDC, yet people in OC still complain about the nice little airport. (Mostly those In Newport Beach, like myself, but, since I dont live on the flight path, I love it)

I do not know much about the runway or taxiway capabilities of SNA, but if the terminal gates have markers for the 767, one would think that now, or at some point in the near future, that the airport could accomodate the 767.

I do know that flights into SNA make lots of money for the airlines, since many business people fly into that airport to be close to the huge number of corporations that are located in the Orange County area. Lots of 757s fly into SNA, frequently very full, so why would a 763 flight into SNA be out of the question, provided, of course, that the airport facilities could handle it?

United Airlines operates Airbusses, some 737s, and a lot of 757s to SNA. Why all of the 757s? Well...SNA is United's #3 location for premier exec. 1K members. They want a nicer plane, and they do not want shuttle. That is why SNA is a shuttle free airport for United.

Anyway, I belive that United would really do well sending the domestic 767 in a 2 class config to SNA b/c it has 34 first class seats, as opposed to 24 on the 757. The pax with the miles deserve a nicer plane to take them to places like ORD. The money is in the premium seats...so why not make the people who make teh company money happy?

As far as the airport is concerned, i have absolutly no doubts that a 767 could fly into and out of their. The 767 meets all weight and noise restrictions for operations in to SNA. So...im wondering why airlines are not sending them there. The real money is in the premium seats, and the 767 has a lot more than the 757...at least UA's 763Ds do.

My dad always flies out of SNA, and on one of his flight upgrade the miles to upgrade vouchers!
There could be avery simple reason for the 767 makings at SNA, it could just be part of the stencil they use.

I think we'll see a lot more 757-200 service out of SNA than 767 service.

Given the fact the 752 sports a pretty high thrust-to-weight ratio, they can fly the stringent takeoff patterns from SNA easily. Well, that does explain why when my brother flew out of SNA on WN a few months ago he was surprised at the number of 752's at that airport.

What I meant to say that one day when my dad flew out of SNA, there where 76 passengers with upgrade vouchers.

Delta should fly 767s in there. They fly them everywhere else!

What airport receiving regular 767 service has the shortest runways? LGA? Just asking.

Well, I live really close to SNA, fly outta there all the time. But, I really doubt this 767 thing. The biggest plane I have ever seen there is a 757. The runway at SNA isnt very long either, a 767 could probably make it, but I really dont think itll happen. John Wayne has been a nice, quiet airport for maaaannny years. Although I would love to see 767's there, I really doubt it'll happen, for passenger travel at least.
