What is a 747-400D? Why doesn't it have winglets?

The 747-400 D is a domestic version of the 747-400. It does not have extra fuel tanks, nor the needed aerodynamical improvements (ie: winglets) since it is being operated on such short flights. Another improvement is the two-person cockpit, which is more economical on a 2 hr. flight than throwing a F.E. onboard as well.

The B747-400D is the "Domestic" version of the B747-400. It is meant to fly short, very high density flights, such as Tokyo-Osaka. I believe it seats 568 in a 2 class config and has a range of less than 2000mi, but don't quote me on that. If you want exact numbers, go to Boeing's website and check out the B747-400D section. It doesn't have winglets because they are just simply not needed.

the 747-400D was yet another version of the 747 developed for the Japanese market. It doesn't have the tankage of the stardard -400, since it doesn't do much more than inter-island flights aerodynamic improvements such as winglets aren't necessary.
