Height/Weight Restrictions For Pilots?

Mon Apr 30, 2001 2:15 pm

Do commercial pilots have to meet a specific height requirement?

What are the minimums and maximums?

Similarly, what about weight restrictions? How big is "too" big for the pilot of one of today's civil jet airplanes?

Come to think of it.....have you ever seen a severely obese person at the yoke of an airliner? Hmmmmm, not sure I recall seeing one.

Thank you for any input.

Look at this picture and you'll see that weight restrictions can't be that hard to comply with... (if there are any)

Hey FBWless......

Was this the headline for the above pic ...... "Engine disintegrates due to excess stress caused by "Jumbo" pilots." ???  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Just kiddin'. I read it (a bird strike).

Vultures did a nice job shredding that baby, didn't they?

Most airline applications say "height sufficient to operate cockpit controls"

I'm only 5'5" and have never had a problem. I've flown everything from Cessnas to Boeings.

I think the weight restriction is somewhat to 250lbs.
I could be wrong tho. That's what I've heard from AA pilots.

I think it is very unfair of you guys to say such a thing about that pilot, he is in a place we would all like to be in! Maybe you should so some respect!

Iain, please. Does this mean you have learnt your lesson about the clothing thing?

You were very unfair about that.

I've flown with some pretty tubby guys. As long as you can pass the medical exam you can continue to fly.

He's not fat he's fluffy !!

You can be as fluffy as you want. But high blood pressure and diabetes go hand in hand with obesity. Both are disqualifying criteria for a medical.

I have a big build with large shoulders. I wear a 54 jacket just so my shoulders fit. I weighed 260 lbs at one time. 220 is about normal for me.

In order to maintain a medical you need to keep in shape. But of course easier said than done. The most popular diet among pilots seems to be the Atkins diet. Its easier to maintain out on the road with those hotel buffet breakfasts....just grab all the bacon and eggs you can eat.

I know high blood pressure will disqualify you for flying fighters, but why in the world would it disqual you from flying an airliner at 1G??? Thanks!

High blood pressure contributes to heart disease and strokes.

How many G's you pull has nothing to do with anything.

it has m very little to do with appearance and a lot to do with the medical. some guy thats 6ft6in and weighs 290 will have a problem w/ the medical. However look at warren sapp. (the football player) hes about 6ft5in and 320 and he would have no problem with the phisycal. whould they let him fly???

I heard somewhere that a pilot can't be taller than 6 feet 6 inches. If that's true, I might as well not even think about becoming a pilot because I'm 14 yrs. old and 6'3"!

Actually, I talked to the flight surgeon for the 90th Fighter Squadron, and he said high blood pressure does reduce the ability to withstand high G forces. Why? I have no idea, but it's what the surgeon said.

The pilot's weight should be below MTOW.
