Delta 737-200 Interior

Sun May 23, 1999 2:19 am

Did Delta's 737-200's have the colorful seats, or did they have the current Delta interior like the MD-88? Also, I saw a photo of an Eastern 727 interior with purple and red seats, I thought Eastern had tan seats with stripes? I have seen the interior on other Eastern planes and they had the tan seats. Did some Eastern planes have different interiors? Thanks

I have never flown Delta but my grandmother flew Delta Express from MCO to IAD and took a picture of the inside and the seats were blue with grey leather headrests and a grey pattern throughout. As for Eastern, maybe the picture you saw was an old one. In the 70's the coach seats were yellow, pink, and I think blue (but don't quote me on this) and the first class seats were blue with maroon headrest covers. They were colorful. One Eastern L1011 I was on had brown seats with blue, red, and yellow streaks throughout. This was in 1980. After that, every Eastern plane I was ever on had (L1011's, 757, DC-9's) had dark brown seats with orange vertical stripes. Some seats had both orange and tan stripes. The seats with tan seemed to be toward the front of the cabin. The bulkhead on the 757 had the Eastern Falcon logo really big (like the entire size of the bulhead) and it was orange and brown. the L1011's I flew on all had greenish galleys and the walls had a tan design. I think the galleys were never changed from the delivery interior. They would match the delivery interiors perfectly. I was never on a EAL DC-10 or A300 but I think they had the same ornage and brown interiors. In 1990, they started making First Class seats two tone grey leather. I don't know if they started to change coach or not.

The Delta 737-200s that I have been on had the same interior as their 757s, some were maroon with a silver pattern on them, and others were a silvery-gray with maroon threads with no pattern. The 737-200s from Western had dark blue seats with little rectangles on them, and they were later changed to the MD-88 colors.

A few more notes.....

The 33 737-200s delevered to Delta in 1985/86 did indeed have the same interior decor and design as DL 757s. They were relatively late in the 737-200 production line, so they had the 757-style overhead bins and wall panels.

The EA DC-10s were in the brown scheme, a design which came in with the 757. The A300s were delivered in a more colorful scheme, which had three different fabrics in coach: red, blue and yellow 'swirled' in with a honey color. First class had a single fabric: honey blended with all three of the colors. This 'A300' design was applied to the rest of the fleet and prevailed until the mid-80s when the 757 'took over'.

Prior to the A300, EA favored a red, blue, yellow scheme (noted in a previous posting) which was brighter and more '70s' in appearance. This was first applied to the 727s getting the 'widebody' look in 1973, but made the rounds of the narrowbody fleet, including DC-9s.

The 70s interior first introduced on the 727s getting the "widebody" look also made it to the Electras that were being used on the Air-Shuttle as backup aircraft. They also changed their window curtains from gray to blue when they put in this interior. The DC-8s never got this interior. Their last interior was dark blue and kelly green seats, which was in all of Eastern's aircraft except the L-1011s from the late sixties to the early and middle seventies.

Thanks L1011(EA Interiors)

I did not know about the Electras getting that festive 70s interior. I saw some of those in the blue and green interior, and they still had all the gold foil trim on the overhead bins and bulkheads, left over from the Golden Falcon days! That must have looked really, umm, interesting with the bright 70s colors.

The EA L1011 had a one-of-a-kind interior it seems. Actually, it drew negative comments in the press, "dull", "cheap looking", at the time. I have an EA L1011 brochure and there is an interior shot, but if you look carefully someone had stuck some old kelly green headrest covers on top of the L1011 mustard-colored seats -- they must have been out of the proper L1011 ones during the photo shoot.

I was looking at my interior picture of the Delta Express 737-200 and even though the seats are blue and grey, the overheads have a burgandy trim. They are the newer type overheads like the 757. So I guess Delta is changing the interiors to blue and grey and leaving the overheads the same. They don't match at all.
