Pm Of Lebanon Now Owns 727, 737, And 777

Wed May 02, 2001 7:53 am

I just confirmed a rumour I heard that Rafic Hariri, the prime minister of Lebanon, has bought a personal 777. What I also found that his also received a 737-700.
He has been flying a 7272 for about 20 years now. This guy is very wealthy (around 5 billions from private business). But I still find it impresive that he is willing to inverst all that money (250 million?) for his transportation. He must be an aviation enthusiast!

The 777 is a 200ER version VP-BRH (for Baha Rafic Hariri: His son).

Hisham.

The 737-700 is VP-BYA

And the 727-200 is HZ-HR3

A private 777. Damn, thats real money.

Would be a lot more encouraging to see less conspicuous consumption and more towards helping the refugees and poverty stricken in southern and eastern Leb.

777MAN,

Saudi Oger is 100% owned by Rafic Hariri. He is the president of the company and his two sons are vice president and General Manager. So even though this aircraft is company owned (Unlike the 727 which is owned by him), practically that's the family's plane.

Alpha, thanks for the photo, I had a link for another one but it mysteriously disappeared from the site it was posted on.

Hisham:

I lived in BEY for a long time. I know the whole thing going on in there.
Beirut is having a really nice time right now, aviation wise. New airport, carriers coming back. At the last six months Air Afrique and LOT came back and rumours say that Pakistan Airlines, Iran Air, Qantas and Air Canada are considering BEY as a destination. What do you know about this?
As about Hariri I shook his hand once during the elections. He is a nice guy. I saw his 727 many times. But what about his 777. Will it be based in Beirut or Jeddah? BEY currently has lotsa triples:
Saudia, Emirates and occasionally British Airways and Kuwait Airways.

Airmale, the smartest thing you've said on here in a long time.

Who needs so many large private jets? What a scumbag, this type of conspcuous consumption (a la Donald Trump) is very tasteless and disheartning.

It's a bit silly to have a go at Hariri for the 777, Lebanon's problems aren't his fault, most of them aren't even Lebanon's fault (Syria, Israel, Palestine, France, US et al). Hariri made his money in business, the wages as PM aren't exactly going to make a difference to his fortune so isn't he giving enough? None of you complain about Travolta's 707, which probably burns twice as much fuel as a 777. Plus, the 777 is a corporate transport, carrying trade delegations, employees etc on legitimate business trips (mostly), not crossing the Atlantic for a wedding. America has plenty of desperately poor and underprivileged citizens as well, I don't hear any of you asking him to hand it all over the huddled masses. Nor will you hear that from me. By the way, I don't begrudge Travolta and his 707 one bit, good on him, hard working lad etc., he should be free to do with it what he wants. Get some perspective.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

Ok, so he's rich. . . that's not a crime.

If we were talking about a wealthy North American or European that had so many private jets, you wouldn't be complaining.

Being rich in a country like America where atleast 90 percent of the population has everything available to them is no crime, its also fine for the Oil rich Gulf region, nor is it in a third world country, but in a third world country that money can be put to much better use, rather than acquiring more for himself Harriri should now share with others, his wealth is a gift and test from God, and besides theres no need for a "Personal" 777 when state owned equipment is available for use, or why not charter an MEA plane for a fraction of the price, be it for personal or official use, and it would be good advertising for the country's national airline Smile

Hariri has done a lot of charity. And I'm one of the beneficiaries. He paid part of my college education and that of thousands other lebanese students. I'm grateful for that.
He is accountable as prime minister (I'm totally against his policies) but as far as his private money is concerned I don't think he has any obligations towards me.

I'm glad he got a 777. That's what I would do if I got the money.

And I'm sure all the whinners would have done the same. Cedarjet and Worldvoyager are right. I guess him being a rich arab didn't help him get your blessings.

Hey Kevin,
So are you of Lebanese origin?
Iran air already flies to BEY. Pakistan flew there for a couple of months then cut the route.
Cedarjet also mentioned once a BA 777 service. But BA serves Beirut through its subsidiary British Mediterranean which operates only 320s. Any specifics about that?

Hisham.

Why does every have to come up with a problem in every situation. Now Hariri having a B777 with his own money is an issue!! Well to everyone here who thinks thats wrong....... what i have to say to them is that as long as he fulfils his moral obligations of giving to charity and various other causes(which i hear he does), he is free to do what he wants with HIS money. When he is worth thousands of millions of dollars literally i dont see why him spending a fraction of that should be a problem with anyone. Maybe him or his son are into planes just like many people are about cars. Im just as passionate about cars as i am about aviation and i think if i was half as wealthy as him i would surely have a B777. And for someone who is is worth billions, getting a plane is just like getting a car for the most of us.

Hisham:

No I'm not of Lebanese origin. I'm more of Eastern European. But hey 8 years in Leb made me kinda United Nations Guy!!  Big grin

Yep, BA doesn't fly to Beirut anymore. British Mediteranean does. Dunno why BM uses an A320 when there is enough traffic to fill a whole 767.
KLM and Air France profit from this situation by sending a 767 and a 747/343/310 respectively.
As for Hariri I already told that he is a good guy and I like him. No matter where he got his money from , he is using fantastic amounts to rebuild Lebanon. Hariri Foundation, Solidere, Beirut Airport, Sports City...
May be at his place another guy would just fill up his pockets. So I simply say "Mabrouk!" (congratulations) for his 777 let him enjoy it to the hilt!!!
As about Beirut Tehran route. Two years ago MEA opened the route and it had very poor loads. Now that Iran Air flies the route MEA can drop it and open the route to somewhere else more profitable.
Lebanon urgently needs the following routes:
Beirut-New York
...-Montreal
...-Sydney
...-Sao Paolo
Passengers fly these routes mosltly through KUL, DXB, LHR, CDG. But if a certain airline would establish a direct link they would make big bucks out of it.
I just don't understand why MEA doesn't take a risk to lease a couple of 340-300s (France as a friend would give a very good price) to be used on the uplisted routes. Lebanese are patriots so they would fly MEA for sure. Unfortunately recently MEA got a very bad management team along with a dummy CEO who doesn't know what an airplane is... He made a decision about Tehran. So hopefully MEA gets a nice management team who will get it on to the right track.

Boeing in pdx,

its Hizbullah that operates mainly in Leb. I know, its hard to keep up with all those arab terrorist groups.

Cedarjet,

No deffense of Hariri and absolutely no comparison to an actor/entertainer like Travolta???

Hariri is a statesman and national leader, he has a sincere and legitimate obligation to the people of Leb. Travolta as an actor and entertainer has an onligation to no one other than his accountant.

Also, Hariri as a government minister has access to a royal flight or some sort of special deal with state owned MEA. I think its fair to say that Travolta lacks in this department.

Your argument that Hariri is not a spendthrift but just a prudent guy because the 777 burns less fuel than the 707 is hysterical.  Smile

And yeah their is a difference than wealthy Euros or Yanks who have private jets. In our country the wealth gap is not nearly as wide as that in Leb where people with money are rare, few and far between. The money is much more needed in Leb rather than Euro and America. The contexts are completely different. So, Cedarjet, you need to gain a perspective. Not me.

PS: Don't try and class Solidere as any type of philanthropic organization. Thats propaganda. Solidere is a ruthless government sponsered real estate monopoly that while re-developing central Beiruit has brought high prices and and thrown people out of their homes.

get a grip cedarjet, while Hariri is no Bashar Assad (or fabulous daddy), he is not a good person.

He already has $5 billion, how much more does he want? is there no limit to greed? there should be a system where the state automatically takes over wealth that reaches a certain amount and distribute it amongst the needy, just the needy and no one else, for example if Harriri has 5 billion the state should take 4 billion away and leave him with a billion, I heard such a system existed in the Scandinavian countries in the early 20th century that is why they are prosperous now Smile

Well Airmale, what would the incentive be to make $5 bil? Absolutely ZERO if at one dollar over $1 Bil it was to be redistributed to someone who's "needy".

Forced redistribution of wealth will NEVER solve the plight of the very poor or disadvantaged...in fact in almost certainly encourages a new level of corruption and deceit by those who are the "distributors".

MEA has just decided to lay off 1100 employees. Yesterday, the pilots stages a strike that halted 11 flights.

I think the management is right. MEA is one of the most overstaffed airlines in the world.

Hisham.
