Last IB MD87 At MIA; IB Goes All-A319

Wed May 02, 2001 8:42 am

According to justplanes.com, the last Iberia MD-87 has left Miami. The two remaining MD87s have now been replaced by newer A319s. Iberia's Miami-based A319 fleet flies 47 flights a week to seven desitnations in Mexico and Central America. Farwell IB MD87s! MIA will miss you!

According to justplanes, IB has 4 Miami-based A319s that will now handle all 47 flights. I'm no expert, but doesn't that seem like too little planes for too many flights? Or is that IB has replaced the four REMAINING MD87s (because there have been some A319s based in MIA for a short while)?

I believe Iberia only had 4 MD-87s in Miami. It would come out to be about two flights a day for each plane, as there would be about 7 daily flights, with some getting 1 or two flights daily.

Isn't Iberia a Spanish carrier?

I'm wondering why IB doesn't cooperate with AA on short haul flights out of MIA as both are oneworld members. IB could save lots of money by keeping their A319s at home in Spain. And AA has excellent connections to Latin America.

Any ideas?

I think Gkirk just spotted another fake on this site.

I don't see a nosegear either. Just the doors.

Its not a fake... the runway has a noticable crest in it. The taxiway the the MD-87 is on is slightly lower.

SJC>SFO, yes, Iberia is a Spanish carrier, but they operate a hub in Miami with 68 flights a week to 8 destinations, including daily MIA-MAD codeshare with AA.

UDO, Iberia's MIA hub is a huge money maker. They are very satisfied keeping things the way they are, and even plan on expanding their MIA originating routes in the near future.
