Can A B 767-300/400ER Fly From SFO To Hkg?

Wed May 02, 2001 1:39 pm

Hello!

I have a question. I would like to know whether or not a B 767-300ER and a B 767-400ER can fly from San Francisco to Hong Kong?

I still remember one time, UAL used a B 767-300ER to transport its passengers from Kai Tak, HKG to LAX in 1996 while its B 747-400 had an engine failure on the runway.

So does anyone know whether or not a B 767-300ER or a B 767-400ER can fly from San Francisco to Hong Kong?

Didn't you answer your own question??

The real question is if it can be done profitably, without severe weight restrictions, which i doubt.

I am not sure whether or not they stopped over somewhere.

So can these two aircraft fly from HKG to SFO nonstop?

If a 767-300 can fly HKG-LAX non-stop like you said, then 763 can fly HKG-SFO non-stop FOR SURE.

I think the distance between HKG-SFO is shorter than HKG-LAX.

I don't think any B767 can fly around 14-15 hours nonstop! By the way, what about ETOPS?

ETOPS is not a problem I guess. Coz the B 777-200ER is ETOPS certified.  Smile

Umm............. what about the Shelved B 767-400LR? Can it fly that far?

767-300ER could easily fly SFO-HKG none stop. Except I am not sure if 763 are 240ETOP?

I don't think any B763 is ETOPS-207 certified, and ETOPS-230 doesn't exist at all right now.
It can fly it nonstop, but only on delivery or for any other purpose, but not with 230 pax and cargo on board. Ever heard of a fully loaded B763 flight over 14 hours on regular schedule? I haven't...

Just a thought - there's this thing called the Boeing web site that publishes the ranges of their aircraft and, I would assume that the distance between HKG and SFO doesn't fluctuate a whole bunch and is, therefore, a known figure. I'll bet a bunch of smart guys like you could figure out whether one of these numbers is larger than the other or not.

If that's the case, UAL can use the B 767-300ER for its SEA-HKG route, then to KUL. Or from somewhere in the States to NRT, then to KUL.

When i go primary school in Kolwoon City, i occaisonaly saw Canadian use 767-300ER instead od it's 747-400, so HKG-SFO, no problem!!!

Well, I'm not exactly sure about flying from SFO to HKG, but last year, my dad flew a CP B-767-300 from YVR to NRT.
While I don't know what the difference in distance between SFO-HKG and YVR-NRT is, I know that it is a relativley long trip.
BTW, it was a nonstop flight.

Don't forget that going westward, you have headwinds to consider, while going eastward, like the UA 767-300ER example, you have tailwinds which are helping you.

The great circle distance between SFO and HKG is 6019nm. The max range of a B767-300ER with a typical load and PW4060 engines is 6060nm. Now saying it can do it because it has 41nm more range than needed is a bit optimistic, actually, a lot more than a "bit." Planes don't fly in straight lines, winds aren't 0, and payload isn't always "typical." So, I'd say it could make it nonstop with very favorable tailwinds and a light load. Otherwise, no, it is not possible.

It Can Do So!

Yes, it can do so! It is possible to fly up to 13,000km on a 767-300ER, i don't know the -400ER figures, but there are also airlines that regularly operate 13-hour-legs lik Condor on its Frankfurt-Mauritius flights.
