AA Strengthens SJU Hub/network

Fri May 04, 2001 2:24 am

---AMERICAN STRENGTHENS SAN JUAN SCHEDULE---

American will expand its San Juan schedule by intro-ducing additional nonstop flights to and from Hartford, Baltimore/Washington and Washington Dulles, effective July 2. AA will add a second daily flight to Hartford and will also add service to Baltimore/Washington and Washington Dulles four days a week. This new service will be offered using Boeing 737s with a capacity of 20 in first class and 114 passengers in coach. (From AA's Daily "Jetwire" service.)

I would not call 15 extra flights per WEEK a major hub expansion, but at least AA will be adding to its SJU operation instead of downsizing it.

Does anyone think that AA will try to expand SJU once again once TWA is intergrated into AA? AA had big plans for SJU that never really materialized (due to its huge operation at MIA) and TWA considered SJU a focus city. Does an "amost developed hub" + a "focus city" = a new growing hub for AA?

Well AA already said that it will discontinue TWA's SJU-LAX daily flight. Im really curious what will happen to the SJU-St. Louis flight. Anyway I think that AA adding these flight will just be for the summer season.

I doubt it. They might gradually expand it like they are now, but their main Latin American hub is and always will be MIA. They'll probably just cut back on the TWA routes, like axing SJU-LAX and maybe SJU-STL as well as AUA and give up the gates TW was using to other airlines. AA has flights to all the other destinations TW was serving from SJU.

Adding another flight to Hartford makes sense. The Puerto Rican market is enormous in and around the city.

The 757 daily flight is already packed every day.

chepos, what is your source as far as AA saying it will
stop LAX-SJU? becuase i have not seen any statement regarding this. i know they are not going to keep
BQN-EWR and BQN-JFK.

I also think that AA will keep STL-SJU, becuase STL
is a hub, and would feed into that flight. of course that
is if AA will keep STL alive, or take it down piece by
piece.

They might keep SJU-STL, but I'm not too sure for how long, if at all. Yes it is a hub, but so is MIA, DFW, and ORD, and the already have multiple flights to those. I'm thinking they might use STL more for mainland traffic but who knows?

As for the LAX route, TWA wasn't doing that great with that route. They were actually getting subsidized by the Puerto Rican government to fly that route in order to give Puerto Rico more direct access to the US west coast. However, I doubt AA is going to get any help and they'll probably just axe it and keep their present SJU-DFW-LAX flight.

I think AA may eventually(if they haven't) use SJU as a Latin American feeder. I think most routes to smaller cities(and some bigger cities) will eventually all be re-routed through SJU in order to pick up more pax. If not that, I think SJU has American Eagle written all over it.

I think it is ironic to say that AA is strengthening the SJU hub, because while it may have added more services to the US it has cut some of the Caribbean routes from there. Last year it dropped Tobago, Grenada and Fort-de-France and this year so far St. Vincent was axed. One wonders if the silver giant is about to drop any more of the smaller points who can least afford the losses.

The San Juan to Bonaire route has been flown at different times over the years by ALM. During the 70s and early 80s they used DC9s and MD80s on the routes. Later on they used Dash-8s but unfortunately they were not able to keep the route going for long.
Maybe since AA (Always Awful) has a hub in SJU they will be more successful.

The Transportation Authorities are upgrading the airports in Culebra and Vieques because AAEagle is planning to fly to there . I have my doubts that this service can handle an ATR-42 every single day.

Although I think these routes are better suited for 19 seat aircraft, I think that the islands of Vieques and Culebra can handle ATR-42 service, at least one flight a day, since AA has connecting traffic from the mainland at SJU, which will probably account for the majority of their pax on this route. For instance, I've known a few people who fly into SJU, only to have to drive to Isla Grande Airport and catch Vieques Airlink or Flamenco to the islands. Also, I'm sure AA will fly cargo to the islands to increase the revenue gathered from these flights.

AA isn't strengthening SJU at all. It is making the best use of its own flights with TW's presence there to make it work. There is overlap between the two carriers there.

I am not surprised LAX-SJU is being dropped. That route makes no sense. American tried it in the mid 1990's before it downsized SJU. San Juan relies heavily on East Coast flights.

Fewer West Coasters will go to Puerto Rico for a vacation when Hawaii is just five hours away.

Blink, AA will not reroute it's Latin American flights through SJU. That is a ridiculous suggestion, especially considering the ones leaving MIA, even to small cities like SAP and PUJ, usually leave pretty packed. Stopping in SJU will pick-up very little, if any, traffic.

With the large Puerto Rican population on the east coast, and especially in the Hartford Metro area, adding more service to SJU makes a lot of sence. The daily 757 now is packed, and this 738 should be as well. It might be seasonal, but if it has good loads, I dont see why AA wouldnt keep it year long since most of these passengers arnt tourist, they are either biz or going home to see relatives there for a seasonal could be supported...
