Galleys On CRJ And ERJ

Sat May 05, 2001 4:30 am

I was just wondering if the galleys on the CRJ and ERJ are capable of heating meals. I know that Air Wisconsin often serves snack boxes on their CRJ's, but none of the Delta Connection carriers seem to offer any type of meals (hot or cold) on theirs. I noticed in the DL time table a flight from Cincinnati to Las Vegas (around 1400) on a CRJ where no meal was listed. On the other flights from CVG to LAS on Delta mainline aircraft, meals were served and movies were shown. Any comments?

The operator can determine if they want ovens installed in the galleys. I believe they carry a lot of weight so most choose not to. But it seems to me there is at least one airline (I can't remember which and it may have been in Europe) that had ovens installed. Other than that it is still possible to serve hot food using those Geanie Trays (sp?). On certain USAirways Express flights those snack boxes are served that USAirways mainline uses in coach.

ANA767, if you're really curious, e-mail me. I'll be working with C&D Aerospace this summer (they build the galleys for CRJ and ERJ aircraft) and I can look into this...

On none of the Delta Connection flights I've been on has there ever been any more food service than cookies and snack mix. And that goes for some of those long 2 hour plus runs as well.

My partner recently flew STL-YYZ on a Chautaqua Airlines (TWA connector) Embraer RJ and they did offer a nice hot breakfast. But I have never heard of hot meal service on the CRJ.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'll definitely try to e-mail you this summer Modesto2.

It's kind of a crock for commuters airlines to fly such long routes and not offer meals. It's bad enough passengers to have to fly such long distances in such small jets (which, despite arguements to the contrary, DO feel cramped after a couple of hours). We should start a petition.

(As you can probably tell, I'm one of those "freaks" who places a lot of importance on airline meals. I just don't understand those of you who are always saying that an airline's only job is to get you to your destination safely. If that's so, I guess you also drive a car with no radio or air conditioning because it's only job is to get you from here to there. And I suppose you live in a house with only one room and no windows because a house's only funtion is to protect you from the elements. You get my point. I agree that meals aren't necessary, but they sure are nice. They can break up a long flight and give those of us who are kind of nervous about flying something to focus on instead of the turbulence, strange noises, crashing, etc. That concludes my rant.)

A second galley (equipped with ovens) is available as an option on the CRJ. According to what the instructors at the Bombardier Training Center told us, the second galley has been chosen by several European operators, but has yet to be ordered by any North American ones.
