Best Airport In NYC Area To Florida

Sat May 05, 2001 11:26 am

With Delta Express service to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, and Southwest service to Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Orlando and now West Palm Beach, Islip/MacArthur is fast becoming a viable option for direct and CHEAP service from the New York Metropolitan area to Florida. What are the thoughts out there? I mean, we aren't talking about JFK-LHR here, but as a fan of ISP, it is big news for me.

On the 2nd week of April of this year I took Southwest Airlines from ISP to Orlando international. I liked the flight, actually, even though it made 2 stops on the way. That actually was the redeeming factor - seeing the Baltimore and Raleigh/Durham airports made the trip seem shorter in many ways - and it was fun. The Southwest staff was also some of the friendliest I've ever encountered. I'd give it an 8 1/2 out of 10. Definately the most fun trip ive had so far.
As for Islip, there are virtually no delays and the airport is new-ish, well-staffed and has a personal type of touch. I'd choose it over JFK.

Hi...I can remember ISP back in the early 70's when Allegheny was still flying convair 580's to ALB. I think at that time they only had one gate, and I think MAYBE two restaurants. I was out at ISP about 2 months ago to pick someone up, and I could not believe my eyes how much it had expanded. It actually looks like an airport now. Jetways and all!

I think its a great airport now for the people in Suffolk, especially for the people way out east. But for Queens and western nassau, its a bit inconvient. Especially now that we have JetBlue and Delta Express serving JFK.

Philh83, have you heard anything new about ISP lengthening their runways? I read somewhere they have plans about doing it, but the town of Islip and surrounding communties are fighting it.

A few years ago they lengthened the east-west runway(not sure of the # it is) at ISP, so if they do lengthen another runway it would be the north-south runway (not sure of the # it is), and I live about 5-10 minutws from the airport and planes go right over my house on take offs and if they do lengthen the north-south runway I wouldn't mind at all  Smile

The best airport to Florida is the airport which has an airline offering the best prices.

However LGA is known for it's delays. Prices being the same I would choose JFK.

jetBlue offers the best service to Florida at the moment with non stop service to Tampa, Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, and Miami. With prices as low as $67.00 each way.

They offer free live television and have comfortable seating on new planes.

ISP is not really convenient from the NYC area. I live in central Nassau county and I still wouldn't make the trip out to ISP unless the fare was cheaper.

As a Long Islander myself, I do all I can to avoid the Belt Pwky and Cross Island. Give me the Southern State anyday.

Check out that B6 route map again. JetBlue serves nonstop, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Tampa, and Fort Myers. No B6 service to MIA.

JFK is the NYC areas most on time airport. jetBlue has 4 non stops to MCO, 3 to TPA, 1 to RSW, 3 to PBI and i think were up to 6 at FLL. The fares are the best in the industry. DL express and Metrojet might match our fares, or undercut us by like $2, but they cant match our planes (brand new A320 vs. an old 732) and they cant match our frills. (Free Direct TV in every seat, leather seats, more leg and pitch room, and friendly service)

i didnt mean this to sound like an ad, but it seems like thats what it is  Big grin Its just the facts.

id have to got with JFK on this one. Your flight will be on time. sure you have to deal with the belt pkwy. but would you rather spend and extra 20 mins driving, knowing that yer flight will be ontime, or waiting sometimes hours on the taxi way at LGA. EWR is alright, but CO runs the place, so no compitition = higher fares.
plus JFK will have the new airtrain starting soon.

just my thoughts...

Out of JFK, you can fly JetBlue, TWA, American, Delta Express, and Delta mainline to Florida. With JetBlue as
well as Delta Express at JFK, fares will probably be a
bit lower than say....Newark, although in addition to
hub airline, Continental, Delta Express have flights to

At LGA, you can fly Metrojet by US Airways, Delta
mainline (including one daily 767-400 to FLL) and

I can't speak for ISP. Sure, Southwest serves it, but for Manhattanites, ISP might as well be in Nevada.

No, jetBlue does not serve Miami has in MIA, but it does serve the Miami market with FLL with six dailies, and soon to be expanded to eight. FLL-JFK is not only jetBlue's first route and the one with the highest frequency, but averages the best load capacities at over 90%. Miami absolutley loves jetBlue, especially the business traveleres who travel between Miami and New York City monthly, sometimes even weekly (I know one person who lives in Miami but works in NYC on the weekends and flies jetBlue almost every Friday and Sunday).

for you pennsylvainians and new jerseyites don't forget pan am flying out of lehigh valley. reasonable pricing no hassles at the airports and extra legroom and hot towels on the 727s. I can't speak directly about the lehigh valley airport but the destination in florida, sanford, is quiet, clean, recently explanded and very easy and central to get to. rumor has it that pa will be using j31s for shuttle service to a couple of other florida destinations from sanford very soon.
