Air NZ To Enhance Services

Air New Zealand Announces Range of Service Enhancements

Mon 07 May 2001
A direct service from Auckland to Dunedin, the introduction of in-flight videos, upgrades to lounge facilities and E-check-in - just some of the service expansions and enhancements announced by Air New Zealand President & CEO Gary Toomey at a special function in Auckland today.

"With or without the reality of head to head competition, with or without the kind of challenges we've met in the past month, Air New Zealand people know we can't afford to relax for a second in today's wide open aviation market, said Mr Toomey.

"That's why we have to keep earning the support of the travelling public with initiatives like these," he said.

Details of the package of new services announced today are as follows:

* The launch of a new direct jet service between Auckland and Dunedin - the first regular (daily weekdays) direct service to fly this route in ten years

* Introduction of in-flight video on Air New Zealand domestic jets - including provision of TVNZ news bulletins morning and night

* New international lounge facilities at Christchurch - followed by upgrades of domestic Koru lounge facilities at Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin

* Roll-out of E-check in at main airports which will offer domestic travellers the option of electronic check-in facilities

* Introduction of new WAP mobile customer information services - including the latest news on flight departure and arrival times via mobile phone text messaging.

* Commitment to continuing the Freedom domestic operation. The no-frills international carrier flew its inaugural domestic flight last Tuesday and has since processed more than 10,000 bookings for flights between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch

In addition to the domestic initiatives, Air New Zealand is also bringing in another B767 aircraft to expand connections between New Zealand and Japan later this year. The airline will also offer increased services to Hong Kong and Taipei from Auckland.

In making the announcements, Mr Toomey paid tribute to the tremendous achievements of Air New Zealand people following the sudden collapse of the Qantas New Zealand operation and gave thanks to the airline's loyal customers for their ongoing support.

The threat of competition does wonders for the domestic operations.

It is about time they introduced in-flight videos and e-check on domestic flights. A good move.

As all these initiatives are already in place with AN, it would seem that NZ are learning from their Australian subsidiary what levels of domestic service are expected of a premium airline these days. Once implemented the standards on the 2 domestic carriers will be similar and another step towards proper integration completed.

Exactly, Tullamarine!! It seems that Air NZ is not as good in terms of service on domestic routes as Ansett! Anyways, does this mean that they're going to resume Brisbane - Taipei, too (from the increased AKL-TPE service??)

I would say perhaps EVA Air may reintroduce AKL-BNE-TPE and Air NZ would operate non-stop.

I think it's a bit unfair to compare Air NZ's domestic IFE with AN's.. Only a very few NZ domestic jet services are over 1 hour, whereas most of AN's are.
