United Airlines- Upgrade Question?

Wed May 09, 2001 5:10 am

To all you savvy United travelers. I am leaving on my honeymoon in 2 weeks to hawaii. I'm just wondering what my chances are of getting a "complimentary" upgrade if I tell the gate agent it's a special vacation and there's room? Do people do this or will he/she look at me like I'm an idiot for asking? I have some FF miles but nothing special. I have only ever flown coach and I'm clueless about upgrades to First class or business class, etc.

United's upgrades to first on hawaii flights are reserved for premier executives and 1k's

You need an upgrade certificate with your elite level. United never gives out complimentary upgrades.

NW-ELITE, that's not true, although they don't do it very often, it has been known to happen.

Good luck, the routes to Hawaii are full of high status flyers cashing in their miles, chances are there won't be any free seats, but if you don't try you definately won't get upgraded!

Don't get your hopes up, but if your nice and you get the right agent, and the flights not fully booked you just might pull it off.

It might not hurt if you wear your tux and the wife wears her wedding dress. That'll attract plenty of attention...

The four members of my family have all been upgraded on an ORD-LAX flight once because it was oversold. So if you're going on a really crowded flight, and all of coach is sold out there might be a chance.  Smile

The chances of getting upgraded are slim and none and slim is on vacation. We do not do comp upgrades. At times we do operational upgrades(downsized aircraft, coach oversold, etc.) when we have to. Even then, we will go into the flight looking for our Premier level and higher frequent fliers to upgrade to free up coach seats. Have fun on your honeymoon though! Best wishes!!

It would be a great way to start your honeymoon. Wish it would work. I have been 1 K with UA for several years and I have NEVER received a complimentary upgrade on UA. Lufthansa has, but NOT UA! Wish you luck, but with UA, no not even 1 K get upgraded, only UA employees.
