What Happened To US's A330 To Mia?

Wed May 09, 2001 10:51 am

Hi all,

I was searching through the USAirways online schedule for flights to south florida in the middle of June...and I noticed that the A330 PHL-MIA flight is gone...replaced by a 734...what happened? did low load factors scrub ir for good? will it be back?? I figure this is my only realistic chance to fly on the US A330 so I am hoping it will be back...

Thanks,
Greg

Most probably it was used on the Miami route for the winter schedule, the A330 would fly to SJU on the weekends but not anymore. Plus they are better utilized in the Euro routes and they were bought to operate the Euro routes.

US Airways probably operated the A330 on a PHL-MIA flight during the high-demand, winter season. There is
perhaps slightly less demand for seats to Miami during
the late spring and summer months, so US Airways has
perhaps deployed a smaller aircraft.

Either way, US has only 9 A330's in service and will not
be taking any more deliveries for some time. It has sub-
stituted the A330 deliveries (Delayed one and deffered
all options) to make room for the A321.

US Airways has serious financial problems, despite a
rising load factor and an apparent vast improvement in
its on-board service. It needs the A321's for the Florida
and California markets and the A330's, as nice as they
are, can be supplanted with the 767-200ER's.

The domestic 330 runs were probably for crew training and familiarity more than a need for that kind of capacity. I don't think there are any domestic non-hub-to-hub markets that require that much capacity. (Not even LAX-JFK.)

When the training and familiarity excercises were complete, it made much more sense to put them on the international runs as they became available. Remember, US just added within the last month flights to Brussels and Amsterdam.

And CoEWR, I know you love to plug your views on the financial situation at US, but that would have nothing to do with US shuffling its 330 flights. An airline that is struggling and an airline that is excelling share one common idea: make as much money as you can. Putting the 330 on the appropriate flights makes them more money.

Using either the A330 or 762 on the south florida routes would be beneficial to US as these are almost always full, no matter what time of day...during the summer season it makes sense not to use them, but US needs the extra capacity on the south florida routes during the non-summer period...

Just did a search on US's website and I chose two random dates in the peak season for travel to MIA and SJU:

Friday November 30 and Wednesday December 12

On those dates, MIA was not served by an A330, while SJU is getting an A330...thats interesting...maybe not high enough load factors on the MIA route...just put an A330 on PHL-FLL and I guarantee US could turn a profit constantly with an A330...on those same dates I did a search PHL-FLL and there are 6 non stops; 4 with 733 and 2 with A319/A320...

Looks like I gotta persuade my parents now to go to SJU  Smile

One other note...I did a search for PHL-SJU on the same dates I was planning to go to SoFla and there was an A330 flight...middle of June...

Thanks,

For the SJU flights the A330 doesn't need to be consistently full because there is a huge cargo market, and U is happy to cash in on it.

CoEwr:
The tenth A330 is coming this summer, or in late 2002, depending on who you ask. I would put my money on this summer. All internal integration between US' and Ual's managment has been suspended, so we need all the A330's we can get.
