American-TWA Takeover

Wed May 09, 2001 10:55 am

I was wondering what your opinion is on the American buyout of TWA??? I am disappointed but American is my favourite airline but it still upsets me because I liked TWA and I am gonna miss them. I also don't like AAL getting the 717 and everything.

What's your opinion???

TWA is one of my fav carriers so it really hurts me see TWA go , but hey thats life. Im happy that at least they are taking the 717 orders but I would have really liked them to keep the Airbus order but it just wouldnt have made sense in the AA fleet.

I am saddened that a great airline is now gone...

I work at St. Louis and it definitely is a passing of the torch. It was a win-win situation for both airlines though. American gains another hub and it's infastructure. It was stated that if American had not come along when they did, TWA was going to go belly-up and liquadate. As far as TWA, employees are sad that the name is going away. However, I see many more smiles now now that employees know they have a future.

Some questions some may have:

- no, no American aircraft at the TWA gates yet,
- no, no 777's have come in to the gate either (darn!)
- we really don't know when we will see the first AA at TWA gates yet
- have not seen any 717's in AA colors yet either

I worked for Tw and have many friends still there.. I'm currently with AA, and very happy to see great people finally work for an airline that has a future. TW made history and will never be forgotten...They have their place up there in airline heaven along with her sisters Pan Am, Eastern, Braniff and many more. It will take a long time before everything is finalized. At AA they're hoping in 18months we all know it will never happen, I guess it's more like wishfull thinking. However long it takes when it's all finally said and done, AA will be a super power house with great employees who have seen the best and worst of times and will take their new company and make it a world premier airline. Welcome aboard to our new friends from TWA!!!!!!!!!

I actually saw a TWA 717 with part of the engine grey so I guess AAL is starting to paint the planes.  Sad

Jenny,

Be advised that this was the normal livery for a TWA 717 before the merger was even thought of. This part of the engine was painted grey initially. It's basically where all the reverse thrust mechanisms are.

Boeing nut,

It was the very front part of the engine, it was nowhere near the reverse thrust.

That was most likely a cowling replacement after a major hail storm we had here about a month ago. Two 717's had nacelle damage. 22 TWA aircraft got beat up pretty good that night.

Recently, TWA took delivery of four 717's at once after the merger announcement and they were still in TWA colors. No hint of AA livery on them yet. But stay tuned!

Matt,
That IS part of the aft cowling of the thrust reverser.
On other airlines, that part is painted a tannish colour.
Either way, it's a manufacturing issue.

No TWA aircraft will be painted in AA colors until ALL formalities are completed. Labor is a huge question mark on the deal, and the IAM is nowhere near signing on to the AA bandwagon.

Just a question about aircraft painting, is AA going to strip all the paint off the TWA ships to have them in bare-metal, or will they be the AA livery on white background?

Cheers

From what I understand, initially, it will be the white fuselage livery. If AA decides to keep them, look for the silver livery. Pure speculation here though.

This is just a guess, but I would venture to say that they are going to go with the bare-metal look, since this isn't merely a case of leasing aircraft, as they did with the Reno Air MD-90's, which were grey. Then again, I have heard arguments both pro and con that say aircraft that have been completely painted cant have the lustre of the bare metal fully restored. Not being an expert on airplane painting, I cant say for sure...

Someone told me that they will be white because it will be hard to restore the baremetal finish to look nice after stripping the paint.

I personally think a grey fuselage would look better than a white one in AA colors.

Agree? Disagree?

About 20 years ago, American got a few 727-200's from Braniff. Weren't those painted in some colour before wearing the AA's bare metal scheme? If American refurbished them in a bare metal scheme, I don't see why it would be a problem today to remove the white paint from the TWA aircrafts.
