Whats It Like Flying The 747

Thu May 10, 2001 2:25 am

As you might be aware I am flying to Karachi in July.

The plane which I will be flying on will be the 747-300.

This is the first time I am flying the jumbo. What is it actually like ?

The landing, takeoff and the general flight itself ?

This might not help.

but.....

back in '99 i went to JFk on BA113 airplane was a 747-100/200 i wasnt sure. The takeoff is NOT vry powerful compared to the 777, the flight itself if good and the landings are awesome!

Have a nice trip!

The one thing that I noticed about the 747s when I've flown on them (4 segments) was that when they land, they seem really smooth and it seems like they instantly lose their inertia, like it takes little effort to slow down and there is little force pulling you forward out of your seat. You can't feel the breaking action like you can on other airliners. But maybe this is the style of the pilots I had, who knows.

Enjoy your flights,

You will have a great time on the 747! If your plane is really loaded, it will be a long take off. But with a 747, any take-off is exciting, just the power will amaze you. You will feel that push from the take-off. She cruises very nicely as well! The landing is great becuase the 16 wheels on the main gear cushion the landing. You will never forget your first 747 flight!

As I have stated in other threads, I flew a BA 747-236B to LHR from DTW at Christmas '00. That thing accelerated forever, and when it lifted off, it shook. It vibrated and shook, almost violently. When we landed, I didnt feel a thing. Cruise was very pleasant, but I was in the foreward Economy cabin (33B). You could feel the airplane yawing from side to side in the rear by the lavs. Great airplane though. Like a tank, dont feel ANY turbulence.

The occasional vibration as the wheels leave the ground on takeoff can be kind of unpleasant on a 747. But that doesn't happen all the time. It's definitely a nice plane to fly in. On a side note, I think that the -400 series is miles above the -100 and the -200 (I've never flown the -300). It feels much more spacious, solid, and powerful.

The 747 is by far my favorite airplane. It's a glorious cruiser, spacious, and very, very smooth. You will undoubtably enjoy your flight.

I have flown on all 4 variants and have to say that the -200 w/ upgraded engines (lufthansa) is the funnest. the -300 is also cool. If you want a smooth nice ride then the 400 is good. The -100 is scary as hell (that's because this was Tower).

The reason that the 747 feels so smoothe on landing is that the air under the plane acts as padding when it lands due to it's extreme mass. Many have refered to it as landing on "a pillow."

The 747 is my favorite airplane for takeoffs!

It is nothing like those small body aircrafts. It is hard to believe such a heavy piece of machinery can fly so fast. It's blasting through the clouds thats so cool! The 747 is just a great plane.

Depends which series you're flying on, at least in my experience. I flew on a 747 for the first time in March of '00. It was a NW -400, out of DTW, and it was great. It felt really powerful on takeoff and climbout, and was very comfortable to fly in. Conversely, my second flight was from PEK to NRT on the first leg of the return trip. This was a NW -200, and was one of the most rickety-sounding planes I have ever flown on. The interior made me feel very 1970's, and the aircraft made several loud and disconcerting noises on both takeoff and landing, and generally had that falling apart feeling to it. I was quite happy to see that a -400 was going to be taking us from NRT back to DTW.

Regards,
Steve

It is one of most magnificent things that ever took to the air....... it is a marvel of human achievement. As far as flying the B747 is concerned......hmm..... i have flown many B747 of many different airlines but honestly their isnt as much different about flying a B747 then most wide bodies. Ofcourse the size from the inside is impressive ....... power on take off is phenomenal and its true that loaded flights do take alot of runway. The ceilings are high and there is a roomy feel inside. One more thing i'd like to mention is that almost all of my most turbulent flights have been on the B747...... maybe its huge surface area makes it more sensitive to it ....having said all that im happy that you are finally getting the chance to fly on the ultimate machine...... as you can tell by my user name, i have great respect for it.

I have flown on many B747's. The B747-200, B747-300 and B747-400. The Airlines have been NW, BA, SQ, TG, GA and KL.

The fully loaded 747 is very different in take-off compared with a B737, MD-80 ect ect. The acceleration is very slow, and the takeoff run is very long.

I remember a flight from HKG (Kai Tak) to LHR on a B747-200 from BA. We "almost" reached the water before takeoff. The plane was very heavy as a rock and we could only go up to 8000 m.

Later this year I am goeing from SIN to SYD on a SQ 747-400.

So, have a nice and save first 747 flight.

I flew on the B744 quite a lot of times and what I feel is that the engines are pretty noisy compared to the B767 & B777. Just my opinion, though.  Big grin

If it is a PIA Combi than I suggest you
Please Inform Allah before departure!!!

I flew on one of these from Karachi to London once but only after a 6 hr delay as they could not shut the cargo door. They are a bit old, cramped and not upto 300 standard and the tannoy system is a joke.

Apart from that, have a good flight...

Don't listen to Hkgspotter1, all he posts are ususally immature anti-Boeing posts.

Hkgspotter1, no, the 747 is a much different flying experience than any other, not just bigger.  Big thumbs up

Long takeoff run, long landing run, flight is like any plane but it feels different because of the 20' width of the cabin.

I agree Hkgspotter1 does seem to make alot of those anti Boeing sentiments pretty clear, while cherishing Airbus. Get real man, the 747 is what opened the world up to cheap long haul flights, and she will ALWAYS be the Queen!!!!!!!!!
