Whatever Happened To Tahoe Air?

Thu May 10, 2001 7:28 am

Most likely, FlyGGA would know this, but if anyone has any info, it is welcome.

And that is: What happened to Tahoe Air? I know they flew a sharply painted 737-200 between TVL-LAX-SJC. I also know that the plane was owned (and maybe operated) by Casino Express. Apparently they had some problems getting their own Certificate.

Well, that was over a year ago, and I haven't seen or heard anything from them since.

So what happened?

I flew with them to Vegas last summer. The flight was from Bellingham, WA (about an hour from downtown Vancouver, 25 miles south of border) and the flight said "Tahoe Air" but was operated by Casino Express and was in a pure white livery, except for small "Casino Express" titles near the front. They're still going in to BLI I believe, the paper said "Pace Airlines" the other day whenever I saw it.

Tahoe Air went out of biz in late 99, or 2000. I'm not sure. I don't think that you flew them, and to my knowledge they never flew outside the TVL-SJC-LAX rotation. Secondly, their one plane was operated in a very nice looking paint job. It reminds me of the F9 tails.

FlyGuy, that was a Cas.X aircraft. Tahoe Air bit the dust almost 1.5 years ago.

Tahoe Air needed some help in getting to the skies and they seeked the asistance of Casino Express. Tahoe Air was having difficulty getting the 10 million dollar nedded to secure the FAA certification . By formulating a contract bulk-fare aggrement with Casino Express they finally took to the skies. Tahoe Air leased seatson aircraft owned and operated by Casino Express they then sold tickets to the public. On June 25,1999 Tahoe Air launched service from Lake Tahoe to LAX and SJC . A third 737-200 received the Tahoe Air livery (N233TM). But Tahoe Air's financial resources were insufficient to sustain themselves and they concluded ops. by the end of Oct. 99 . Just four months after launch date. There is a good article on the March/April issue of Airliners on Casino Express and they talk about Tahoe Air.

The latest endeavor from Casino Express is Air Laughlin with flights to Laughlin from BUR, ONT, SJC and PHX. I really hope they do well but would be suprised if they were still around in a year.

Matt,

Chepos is correct about the financial problems. When they started missing payments to Casino Express, CXP started pulling the aircraft from the Tahoe Air flights to do other charters. In October of 99, CXP stopped operating the flights all together and Tahoe Air scrambled to try and find another airline to operate the flights. For a couple of weeks, Lorair stepped in and operated the flights (I actually flew on one of those from SJC to TVL). Then I heard there was a paperwork problem with the FAA and all flights were stopped. Last fall I had heard that Tahoe Air was still alive and hoping to resume service to TVL with 50 seat turboprops. Have not heard anything since.
