Uzbekistan Targets BHX For Flights To JFK

Thu May 10, 2001 3:15 pm

The latest Flight International has reported that Uzbekistan is considering Birmingham, UK as their stopover station and continues to New York-JFK.

It states that the flight will be twice weekly by a 767-300. Uzbekistan hopes to launch this route this July. Other possible North American destination are Toronto and Hamilton (both in Canada).

I'm wondering that when did Uzbekistan gets permission to fly JFK? I know that the current 2x weekly JFK flight is a flight operated for Air Ukraine via Kiev.

They are considering to fly to both Hamilton and Toronto ? Does Hamilton have what it takes to support a flight by Uzbekistan? Yes I know that Hamilton is in Southern Ontario's industrial belt but hey WestJet serves Ontario as an alternative to Toronto because of lower landing fees.

I don't think you will see an UZBEK 767 at YHM any time soon...no bridges and no where near the facilities to handle a 767...but you other news makes my wonder if they are going to dump the Air Ukraine codeshare, and if so, could this mean that they are finaly getting their own 767's, or possibly one of the other Ukrainian carriers will take over the route...

Doesn't Uzbekistan Airways already fly to JFK via Kiev from Tashkent? I think that Air Ukraine codeshares on the KBP-JFK sector.

Anyway, Uzbekistan Airways used to fly to JFK via Amsterdam.

There's a strong presence of air carriers from Central Asia and Middle East here in BHX (PK, EK, Turkmenistan). In fact, Uzbekistan used to fly into Birmingham for a while, but then they pulled out. It had been commented in the airport magazine that Uzbekistan Airlines would possibly start routes to JFK with BHX as their intermediate stop, but in the light of their pull-out, I thought the whole plan had fallen through. Interesting to see what happens next. We certainly need more flights to North America!

I guess this is explained by the post on this Forum about Air Ukraine starting it's own 767-300 service to JFK and YYZ from Kyiv, Lviv, and Ivano Frankivsk
