Bye-bye A300s on north Atlantic:

American Orders New Boeing Aircraft
FORT WORTH, Texas, May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- American Airlines today announced it has placed an order for 15 new GE-powered Boeing 767-300ER widebody aircraft. The 190-seat aircraft, to be delivered to American in 2002 and 2003, will further the airline's strategy of simplifying its fleet. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.

Some of the new aircraft will replace TWA's nine Pratt & Whitney-powered 767s, which are not common to American's existing fleet of 79 GE-powered 767s. The remainder of the new 767 order will replace American's three-class Airbus A300-600s on North Atlantic routes, allowing American to standardize its transatlantic services on Boeing 767 and 777 aircraft. The Airbus aircraft will be refitted with two-class interiors and deployed to serve American's Caribbean and Latin American markets -- missions for which the A300 is ideally suited, from both a range and cargo capacity standpoint.

``The standardization of our 767 aircraft and the simplification of our transatlantic fleet to just two aircraft types will yield tremendous efficiencies for American,'' said Tom Horton, American's senior vice president of finance and chief financial officer.

The redeployment of the A300s will free a number of 757 and 737 narrowbody aircraft to move into American's domestic system. Moving the smaller Boeings into the domestic system will give American added scheduling flexibility and will ultimately reduce the need to purchase additional narrowbody aircraft.

American currently operates a fleet of 719 aircraft. This year, it will take delivery of 55 new Boeing aircraft, while retiring 39 aircraft. TWA operates 178 aircraft.

American Airlines Orders 15 Additional Boeing 767 Airplanes

767-300 becomes the world's most popular-selling widebody

SEATTLE, May 10, 2001 - The Boeing Company confirmed today that American Airlines has ordered 15 additional 767-300ER airplanes. Boeing will deliver the new airplanes beginning in 2002 and continuing through 2003.

"This order for 15 more 767s confirms that this airplane is perfectly suited for American's long-haul routes," said John Quinlivan, vice president and general manager, Boeing 767 program. "As a result of this order, the Boeing 767-300 becomes the world's most popular-selling widebody airplane."

Quinlivan said the Boeing 767-300ER provides maximum efficiency, twin-aisle passenger cabin convenience, excellent fuel efficiency and modern airplane systems.

"We believe these new airplanes will serve American very well for years to come," he said.

American currently operates a fleet of 79 Boeing 767 airplanes on a variety of long-haul routes primarily over the Atlantic Ocean. Boeing 767s log more than 1,800 flights each week across the Atlantic.

The 15 additional 767-300ER airplanes American has ordered will include a new interior based on the award-winning interior design of the Boeing 777. The new interior uses state-of-the-art lighting and design concepts to amplify the feeling of spaciousness and to maximize the amount of space available for passenger carry-on baggage -- all this on an airplane prized for long-range comfort. The airplanes also will provide more room throughout coach, a standard feature on American airplanes.

To date, 80 airlines have ordered more than 900 767s. The 767 family has the lowest operating cost per trip of any widebody airplane. This low operating cost, combined with a choice of three sizes, variable range capability, almost universal airport compatibility and ETOPS capability, makes the 767 a versatile family of airplanes.

American Airlines and its regional airline affiliate, American Eagle, together serve more than 237 cities in 49 countries and operate approximately 4,100 daily flights. American Airlines, which traces its beginnings to 1926, today operates a fleet of more than 719 modern jetliners and employs more than 105,000 people worldwide. TWA LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Airlines, operating 178 airplanes and employing more than 20,000 people.

Sad to see the A300's leave  Sad. But anyway, what will happen to them? Will they be sold and converted in to a freighter or will they be stored in the desert? Anyone who has info about this?

Did you not read the article at the top? They are being transferred to American's Carribean and Latin American markets. They won't be leaving American's fleet for awhile.

That sounds very good. However, I think the 767-400 would be perfect for American on some of their Trans-Atlanti flights. They need something larger and more comfortable than the 767-300 but not as large as the 777-200 for some of their flights. The 767-400 would be perfect for them in my opinion.

American moving ahead...

While Delta struggles with a dearth of widebodies,…

While Continental still needs to find financing for a portion of its outstanding airplane orders this year,…

And, while United can't even imagine ordering a plane in the near future because it lost $300 million in the first quarter and will probably lose just as much in the next quarter,

all of the years that Crandall spent cutting expenses, paying off debt, and building up American's liquidity, are finally paying off.

This is one of those "in your face" moves. Yeah, the economy may not be doing so well, but we American are perfectly positioned for the future. What about you United, Delta, and Continental?

It makes sense for American to order 767-300s. These are essentially the Transatlantic workhorse for many airlines today. American is one of the few majors that still fly the A300, most of Continental's (many of them by way of Eastern) have already been sent to the chop shop. And by going to more of a common fleet helps keeps costs lower in the long run. But what will they do with TWA's P&W 767s? Will they be sold to a cargo carrier, or will someone like Delta pick them up (Delta's have P&Ws).

I think AA did not order the 767-400ER because of potential parts commonality issues. I do see AA stepping up flights to Europe from ORD, JFK and MIA using the new 763ER's.

As for ex-TW 767's, I think DL may pick them up for a song, though.

The A300s in AA's fleet were built in the late 1980s and are the more advanced A300-600R types, whereas the CO A300s were older B4 models. There is nothing 'degrading' to these A300s to be going to the Caribbean and Latin routes, that's where they were originally. Most AA employees I have spoken to respect the aircraft and with the latest transatlantic-style seats they are very comfortable.

Very interesting comment. I agree with you. I think AA'ers past and present are beginning to think "hey, maybe Crandall was doing us a favor!" AA is well suited (far above any other north American carrier) for the future. They have the best financial suiting, the best customer base, and seemingly the most satisfied work groups.

I think we will see AA soar in the next several years.

That's good news. American will have the second largest 767 fleet in the world, first is Delta. American ordered those additional 300ER's for two reasons: one is to replace the A300's which will be reassigned on flights from the East Coast to Latin America (American wants only two types on the Atlantic: the 767 and the 777) and the othe reason is the power plant problem, the 767's coming from TWA have PW engines instead of GE. What will happen to the TWA 767's? Probably Delta will pick them up like you said.
The other problem is the 757. The ones that come from TWA also have PW engines, instead of RR engines. But that problem could be solved if United and US Airways get married. American (+ TWA) will pick up the 757's from US Airways (mostly ex Eastern) and United will pick up those from TWA. So American(+TWA) would end up with a large fleet of RR powered 757 while United/US Airways would end up with a large fleet of PW powered 757's. I don't know what American will do with TWA's 757's, I just imagine what could happen.

Do you actually work for AA? Most satisfied work groups, eh? Let's start with the APA pilots, flight attendants next, then rampers, and finally Eagle pilots and F/A's...all of whom are screaming bloody murder for more money and seniority protection when the inevitable integration of TWA LLC begins. Can't wait to watch that bloodbath unfold and yes it will be a messy one.

What's the connection between an order for 767's and "being perfectly positioned for the future"?? Is this the same airline that lost $44 million in Q1?  Insane

The A300's (35 in all) were ordered in the late 1980's mainly to service the Caribbean market and selected
Latin America markets as American Airlines was in
the process of expanding in South America following
its acquisition of Eastern Airlines Latin America routes.

In 1997, faced with a shortage of 767's in its fleet,
AA converted 8 of the 35 A300's in the fleet to a
three class cabin, installed PTV's in Economy, and
deployed the planes on flights from Boston to both
Paris and Heathrow and the short-lived Boston to
Gatwick flight AA operated in 1998-99, as well as
two or three of the six JFK-Heathrow flights AA
operates, and the Newark-Heathrow flight. The
A300's were also equipped with power-ports in
the Business Class cabin and some Economy.

AA also briefly operated an A300 on the Madrid
flight from Miami.

The A300's will probably be phased out slowly
over the next five years or so. As AA standardizes
its fleet around the 737, 757, 767, and 777, along
with the 717's it inherits from TWA and the F100s,
the A300's will probably be replaced with additional
767's, perhaps even the -400's, and 757's where
the A300 is too big.

When the A-300 subject came up some time back on here, one of our fellow posters (that works for AA) stated that the A-300-600's are in the fleet plan until 2008 or someting like that. They are a virtual cash machine on those caribbean / latin American routes.

Expect to see them on the property for a long while yet.

As a model the 767-300 is the most popular-selling widebody. The 747s sold over the years include all models (-100, -200, etc).

The AMR website says that this order will free up some 737s and 757s for domestic use. Any idea as to what routes these planes will be put on?

Most if not all of TWA's 767's are currently out of operation right now. Check out Bill Harm's for that info. All of the 767-300s are leased from GECAS or ILFC, they will most certainly be returned to the lessor who will most certainly be able to quickly release 9 gently-used 767-300ERs. As for the 767-200s most of those are leased too, and American said they will not take those planes up once TWA/AA is fully integrated. I would expect them to be sitting out in the desert for a while. Don't really know who would want 6 old 762's... maybe ABX will pick em up and make them into freighters. Plus most of the 757s are leased from Boeing Capital... when American finally chooses to finalize the fleet I'd imagine some sort of leaseback would be worked out.
