How Much Does A B747 Cost These Days?

Fri May 11, 2001 8:16 pm

Anybody know what the average cost is for a Boeing 747-400 nowadays?

If it's not too much, I was thinking of picking up 3 or 4 some day soon. (I hate fighting this ground traffic.)  Big thumbs up

Amazing!!

I guess I'll have to settle for a DC-3 instead?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Incredible how high the cost has gotten since 1970. I recall seeing the movie "Airport", and a pilot makes the comment in the movie that a 707 carries a price tag of $8 million. Heck, that's pocket change today. You need 25 times that to get a 747.

That's inflation for ya.

But a 747 is worth any price!!  Smile

Don't forget those prices are just for the shell. Interior furnishings are extra.

deduct aprox 20% from the list price and you will find the typical price airlines getting it for.
of course, lauch customers and big-deal customers may expect even more.
as i know from reliable source in GECAS, there is no evidence that any airline/leasing company paid list price for any boeing aicraft for last 15 years.

IIRC, Pan Am paid $25 million each for its initial big order of B747s.

Keep in mind, BostonBeau, that Pan Am's 747 order was in the late 60's (right?? someone correct me if i'm wrong).

According to the Inflation Calculator at www.westegg.com/inflation, $25Million in 1968 is like $124556250.68 today.

After looking at the Boeing price list, this would give Pan Am a 33% to 42% discount, which as far as I've seen, is fairly in line with launch customer discounts.

By the way, at that rate, that would give launch customers for the 717 (AirTran), a rate of about $15 million each (assuming the same launch customer discount)... that seems like quite a steal!
