Mirrodie,

I was there...here is what happened...

My dad and I left the Marriott Harbor Beach hotel about 11:00 and began to walk north along A1A. About 5 minutes after we left, I heard the faint drone of prop engines, and within seconds a PBY Catalina made a low fly-by over the water. About 10 minutes later, we were still walking north on A1A and an AA aircraft (either 763 or A300) made a couple of passes and did a sharp left hand climbing turn. That was it for air traffic til we decided to stop at the intersection of A1A and Sunrise and find a place to sit...we sat on the concrete "wall" separating the sidewalk from the beach. I got out the video camera and prepared to record:

We saw the following A/C (not in any particular order)
F/A-18
F-15
An-2 (my first Russian plane-in-flight sighting, not counting that Sukhoi aerobatic plane, Su-31)
Su-31
Stearman
B-52
B-1B (very awesome, two of them in a low altitude fly-by)
B-2
F-14
F-4
C-17
KC-135
AH-1
CH-46 (dragging five guys on a rope out the aft cargo bay)
CT-114 (Snowbirds, I thought they were way better than the Thunderbirds)
F-16C (Thunderbirds, I noticed that the number 4 aircraft was replaced with the back-up F-16D...I wonder what happened to the number #4 a/c)
HH-60
UH-60
Dauphin
A-10
C-130

About 2:00 my dad left and about 2:45 I left the beach to head back to the hotel, and I watched what I could from the balcony in our hotel room...

Any other questions, feel free to ask!

I was just wondering what the AA flyby was like. Is there anything cool about an airliner flyby? In your opinion?

Thanks, Mario

"Is there anything cool about an airliner flyby?"

-How about seeing a 777 make a 90 degree turn in around 1/4 mile. then almost pulling a vertical climb and roaring off out of sight? Impressive.

USAF HUMMER
I'm sorry to say but it was not a 767-300 or a A300.
It was a 777-200

She gave one of the best shows of the weekend. In her last pass, she came in at 200ft with gear down and flaps 40 doing about 140, The she went full throttle, started a spiraling climb up to FL8500. one hell of a demo. Almost as good as the SAA 744 back in the 99 show.

I'll post the Reg when I find the roll of film she is on. But that might take some time because I shot 17 rolls.

I was fortunate enough to sit in the VIP section, and the 777 spiral up was the most magnificent thing I've ever seen. Later in the day I was able to see traffic overhead going to MIA including IB 747, VS 747, LH 747 b/c after all, military stuff does get boring after awhile.

I was in South FLA that weekend and wanted to go but I chose not to be part of the estimated 3 million in attendance. Local news stations were covering the events and I caught a bit of it on TV. It was a great weekend both weather-wise and for aviation enthusiasts.

The show was great. I attended both Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday Thunderbirds show was the "low show" due to a low cloud cover. The low show is not as exciting of course, but they do have to observe their show parameters for safety. Sunday had the "high show" and those U.S.A.F F-16's were just spectacular. They really rip the sky. The best part of the show though was NOT the F-16's, F-14, B1's, B2 etc but instead it was THE GIRLS!!! THERE WERE THOUSANDS OF GIRLS WEARING VERY LITTLE!!! IT WAS GREAT!!! I do love aircraft, but I had to force myself not to watch all of the beauties parading by!

The AA 777 went on at about 11:45 or so on Sunday, 15 minutes before the aviation half of the show was supposed to start. Very poorly managed for that reason.
