United's New Seats

Wed May 26, 1999 9:12 am

I flew a United Airlines B757-222 from Los Angeles to Chicago this past March. It had United's redesigned seats in United First and United Economy. I used to never be able to fall asleep in domestic planes (it was a red-eye flight), but 5 minutes after we took off, I was out. Besides that, the crew was nice, and would definitely spur me to fly United again. I used to have mixed feelings about 757 comfort, but the new seats are really cushy and soft. I'd just love to sit in an A320 with those seats!

Yea...the FC seats are nice in design and comfort. They cover just about every aspect that one could want (I'd still like to have leather, though!). I haven't had the "pleasure" of testing the new YC seats out yet...they look pretty nice, too! I still don't think that there is any difference between the A320 YC and 757 YC seats (the old ones). I think I am the only person on this forum who thinks that, though!

From the pics in the Cabins section of this site, the new 757 seats seem to resemble the YC seats in the 777 -- adjustable headrest, same armrest style, etc.

Can anyone tell me who manufactures the YC seats in UA's 777? Thanks.

According to my mom's UA flight attendant handbook, the A320 seats and aisle are one inch each wider than that of the Boeings. I know it doesn't seem like much, but I recently flew a United 737-300, and I thought about that extra inch, and believed that yes, it would help. I was in seat 3D in United Economy.

Yea...I've read that in my mom's handbook, too...but to me it does not make a difference. I still feel cramped in any United Economy seat...

For the 777:

United Economy: (New and old)Recaro
United Business: (New) B/E Aerospace (old) SICMA
United First: (New beds): Rumbold Genesis Bed (New seats): Rumbold (old): SICMA

Hope it helps!! Pretty soon the SICMA seats will all be removed from service!

I recently was on a UA 757 with the redesigned seats-- they are by far the most comfortable economy class seats I have ever been in, at least on a narrowbody. And I love how the headrests prevent my head from falling as I drift asleep.

Last weekend I was also on an A320 with the headrests in economy-- but unfortunately I had the window seat in an exit row so the seat did not recline. THAT was not so comfortable.

I had always wondered about the various manufacturers and appreciate the complete rundown on your new and old seats.

FYI, I flew on N767UA FRA-ORD in (then) Connoisseur Class and I really liked the older SICMA Business class seats, but some of the maintenance guys around here (Bay area) said they were a headache mechanically and electrically. That being said, SICMA enjoys wide popularity so I'm not sure what's going on. The new BE seats are nice as well. The new Delta Business Elite seats are also BE, as are the AA business class in the 777 (perhaps other a/c as well).

Recaro is really getting a lot of orders for YC seats, especially for long-haulers, from UA, AA (A300 and 777) and Swissair (all the new Airbus lineup). They must be doing something right.

FYI, for all seat fanatics, BE Aerospace has its own website (listed on Yahoo) and is worth a look just to see some of the latest product.
