Is BA Really That Bad?

Sun May 13, 2001 12:03 am

I keep hearing terrible things about it, but Ive been living under the impression that it is one of the best airlines in the world. How bad is it?
Thanks

BA is not too bad, their service is not class leading, but by no means the worst either. Their reputation lies in being a good solid airline, with an excellent name for safety. Some south east asian majors receive all the plaudits for their service, but their safety ethos leave a lot to be desired.

They look after their premium pax very well, they dont give a toss about anyone else though.

No BA is not bad. And despite what people on here say they do look after their economy pax as well. Its the same seat pitch as most majors and you get PTVs on a lot of aircraft. No not every aircraft has them but then they do have rather a lot of aircraft to fit out and this cannot all be done in a single night. The premium pax. gets a lot but they also pay a lot. BA has some of the highest airfares in the world and when you pay big money you expect good things.

The crews are good and safety wise they are better than a lot of carriers around. Most people who badmouth BA tend to be those who have had problems with BA before and so seek revenge on here. But then most of us who travel have had bad experiences with an airline at some stage and so the ideal thing is to just not travel with that airline again. Yes air your views on here once but then leave it!!!!!

No BA is not bad just big!!!!

BA are very good.My march trip from LHR to JFK and back with BA was very good.My trip to Lisbon last year on BA was also very good.

Someone will always have a problem with an airline for one reason or another, that does not mean they are a bad airline.

BA - Bloody Good!

BA is overall, a very good, reliable, and competitive airline. It does a very good job of looking after the
business traveller, the bread and butter of its, and
most major airlines' business however I have found
service in the main cabin very good overall. The
cabin crew are generally pleasant, efficient, and
the route structure is phenomenal.

I had a great flight with them (LHR - Nice, France) and we were in a half empty 763 and the ecomony seats were leather and had loads of room!! They had to be pretty similar to buisness class!! I also got to sit in the jump seat for landing at LHR which was nice! The staff were very nice.

They are a very good example and a good flag carrier!

The trip to Lisbon was probably a GB Airways flight in BA colours, and yes it is good.
The problem with BA and other large airlines is the inconsistency in the aircraft. If you fly out on a newish 747 400 with pTV and back on an older 747 without pTV then you are going to be disappointed.
Pick an airline with the type of aircraft you prefer is the simple answer.

RichardW,
For such a massive airline, I think it has to be expected that BA will have to swap aircraft in order to best utilise aircraft on the routes where they are needed. I don't know if you live in the UK, but if you do, then you will have seen BA's television advert where they give a list of destinations where there new first class is available. They only have a certain number of aircraft fitted out with it at the moment, and they have to make sure that the aircraft with the new first class are put on the routes advertised as having new first class. You may be lucky and have a brand new 747 going spare on that day, and you might not be so lucky another day, but unfortunately that is just the way it works.

Also, if BA319 went to Lisbon from LHR as he seems to imply then it wasn't a GB Airways aircraft in BA colours, but a British Airways mainstream fleet aircraft, namely an Airbus A320 aircraft (BA 500/502) or a Boeing 757-200 aircraft (BA 496/504). If he was travelling to/from Gatwick, then yes he probably would have been flying with GB airways, but the service is very similar.

No way! BA is the best!

Okay, I'll be serious now,
BA isn't a bad airline at all. Although I must say, there economy class is nothing like KLM's or Lufhansa's, overall BA is a good airline. There staff is quite nice, especially the ticketing staff (at least in my experience). During the past 3 years, all I have been traveling on to cross the Atlantic is BA. However, this summer I'll be flying on LH.

Regards.

I have flown BA on a regular basis. I have decided that regional and International flights are either good or exellent, and inter-continental flights i have found not so good.

Service is the same, Good on short flights, bad on long flights (compared to other airlines).

I've flown BA quite a bit, but where ever there is a choice I avoid them. Every time I have flown with them, something has gone wrong or at least not been quite right. OK, so other carriers are not perfect either, but with BA things not being right seems to be a habbit.

I shall site the example which finally made me decide to avoid BA whenever possible:

On a full 757 from Madrid to Heathrow one Friday afternoon late last year, I was in the back row of Club Europe (business class). When the crew FINALLY got to serving a drink, the chief steward said "Sorry sir, we've only got plastic glasses left. That's very British Midland, I know, but I hope you don't mind"

Now I didn't mind the plastic glass at all. However, its all very well providing c**p service, but suggesting such c**p service is on a par with the competition is beyond belief. I've flown BD or IB LHR-MAD since.

Andy

BTW: I told that guy I was a gold card holder with BD (which I was), that I used to work for BD for nine years (which I did), that I'd made a note of his name (which I also did) and that I'd pass his comments on. I think he got a bit of a shock!
