A345/A346 Engines Vs B777engines

Sun May 13, 2001 12:59 am

Hey all,

I was wondering how the engines that power the A340-500 and -600 compare with those on the B-777.
Is Rolls Royce the only engine manufacturer for the A345/A346, or will P&W and GE have engines available?
The A345 will have Trent 553-61's and the A346 will have Trent 556-61's. How are these different and how do they compare with the powerplants on the 777 in terms of thrust ratings, size, etc?
Looking at pics of the A346, the engines look big, but are they as big as the 777's?

The A340NG are so far only available with RR Trent engines.....
The 777 engines are the biggest engines of all, the GE90 has a fan diameter of 123"
The A340NG will have engines with around 53-56000 lbs of thrust, while the 777 has thrust ranging from 80000 till 95000 lbs...The new 300ER will have 2 GE90-115B with 115000 lbs of thrust each....

Having 4 engines, the Trent 500 doesn't need to be as big as the engine, which powers an equally sized twin, does it?
