Defunct Airlines You Miss

Sun May 13, 2001 3:50 pm

Are there any defunct (or about to go defunct) airlines you have flown and/or respected which you still wish was with us?

For me, a sad loss was British Caledonian. "BCal" was a fantastic airline which died a premature death, not from deregulation but over-regulation. Would BA be a different airline now had BCal taken over instead? After all, weren't the "Caledonian girls" just the greatest?

No surprises from me-

1. Braniff International. They were really good, had style.

2. Legend. Ditto. And their traffic was ramping up nicely. A different capital market would have them flying high now.

3. Air Cal. Good folks, good service, it took typical AA arrogance to completely destroy a well-entrenched west coast network in a matter of months.

4. PSA- See No. 3 above, and substitute "USAir" for "AA," and "incompetence" for "arrogance."

There are others whose people and service I liked- the original Frontier, Muse Air, Pan Am.

I would have to say Compass Airlines Mark 1 for three reasons;

1. Introduced competition in the Australian market
2. Had a stylish livery
3. Operated A300s & A310s

Braniff (ver 1.0) creativity maximus!

MGM Grand One word "Luxury"

Air Atlanta Proving the small guys can do it better

Legend killed by "AA" AKA Anti Christ Air

Florida Express without a doubt the most attractive single FAs in the business

I'm with Vw, I miss AccessAir as well. In their second attempt at operating, you could fly between Des Moines and Chicago real cheap. Last April I had to take Greyhound because, even with a one-week advance purchase, it would have cost me more to fly from CHI-DSM than it it cost me to fly VS LHR-ORD!!

Hey all,

I miss a lot of different airlines like Pan Am, Braniff, CP Air, etc, but I would have to say that the one I miss most is Eastern Airlines. I loved their bare metal scheme with the blue "hockey stick" cheatline.

There are others as well, Eastern, Western Airlines, British Caledonian, TWA, CP Air, Braniff, Valujet, Wardair and Trump Airlines.

1. Braniff. Sometimes looking out my office window I think I can see one of BN's beautiful 727's on final to DCA. BN had their problems, but they were in a class of their own.

2. Pan American World Airways. Although I never got the chance to fly on them, I thought they were great.

3. TWA, already.

4. Huges AirWest, and their flying bananas.

5. US Airways, slightly in advance. After the merger is offically pronounced dead a wolf will come out of the woods and dismember it. I never did like wolves.

Contrails,

I appreciate your metaphor of a wolf dismembering US Airways. As it gets down to business, the wolf will find the remains of Colonial, Mohawk, Empire, Lake Central, PSA and Piedmont in US Airways belly.

I guess what goes around comes around.

People Express And Piedmont!

Tue May 15, 2001 5:00 am

I miss People Express because of the great fares they brought to my hometown, Rochester, and the way they opened up a whole new era in air travel for us. PE was also lots of fun.

I miss Piedmont because of their outstanding service...clean and shiny a/c, dependable schedules, convenient hubs, and many nonstops from Rochester to many places. Fortunately, the superior Piedmont service culture turned "USelessAir" into a whole new airline after their 1987 merger. Unfortunately, they competed on lots of routes at Rochester, and after the merger service was cut way back and fares were jacked up.

Flying Colors................. the TRUE and original Flying Colors............

The original Braniff..........

Just a side note, after living in Phoenix for a short time, a local newspaper was commenting on America West Airlines painting their planes in diferent colors, such as City of Phoenix, TeamWork, etc, etc, anyway, they stole Braniff's title and gave it to America West, Flying Colors..... Nothing against America West......
