Lufthansa A340 Over Edinburgh

Sun May 13, 2001 8:01 pm

At 11am (BST) this morning (Sunday13th)I watched a "high-flyer" pass overhead Edinburgh heading on a northwesterly track. On closer inspection with my 'scope I saw that it was a Lufthansa A340 and I was able to watch it continue its track presumably towards the oceanic entry point.

This isnt the first time i've watched this airline and aircraft pass over at this time of day - anyone got any idea of the origin and destination airports of this flight?

Well I guess it would be from FRA or MUC dont know where too though. LH 744s pass high over NCL as well.

I often see a/c fly high over my house but it's not so often I can see which type and airline  Sad.

Just like birdwatching - without having to be so damned quiet!

It depends weather wind aloft better for route possible. It saves fuel rather than regular route which is possible strong headwinds. Maybe LH 340 avoids regular route to fly over EDI better lighter headwinds. It changes all the time route point to point.

I would guess the flight was maybe going to KDTW (detroit, michigan) They fly the A340 to detroit sometimes but then switch it back to the B747. Could be other USA destination but i know from living in Detroit they fly the A340 here. I see it most nights around 6:45 about 30mins after take off. I live 50 miles north of dtw and see a lot of international flights headed for europe.

When i was studying in Manchester UK
3 yrs ago, I used to watch the sky using a small scale scope in the afternoon. One day i saw a smiliar scene happened, in fact it's quite usual, a VS B744 flew over the air-field of Manchester city with a long long white tail. I can still saw the big Virgin Logo on the tail and of course four red colour big engines, company with the deep red colour light of sunset.

Not really sure what flight it was, of course it flew to the other side of the atlantic. That is the most wonderful scene i've come across, now i don't have to chance to see it again here in Hong Kong.
Why there's no such a white long tail generate by the aircraft in Hong Kong, is it the warmer temp.??
