Mon May 14, 2001 6:39 pm

With the Paris Airshow next month, both Airbus and Boeing are expected to present some new customers and new orders.

What are your best bet ??

It would be nice to see the fleet renewal plan by Ansett/Air NZ but it may be further off than Paris!!!

Also, more A380 orders. Lufthansa??? JAL???? Cathay Pacific???

I think that KLM will go for the 777 and LH for the A380. Hopefully we will see a few more orders for the A380, maybe from a Japan carrier? And of course I hope to see lots of suprices  Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

Here are some possibilities. How real they are is anyone's guess:

British Airways -- 777-300ER
KLM Royal Dutch -- 777
Lufthansa -- A380
Atlas Air -- 767F or A300F (could be either), A380F
Delta Airlines -- more 737NGs (not -800s?)
Emirates -- more A330s and 777s, perhaps A32X/737NG
Korean Air -- 747-400ERF

Those are a few I could think of at the moment. I'll see what more I can come up with.

With Atlas having recently furloughed 105 pilots, I'd be very surprised to see the long rumored 767/AB6 order. With the return of several aircraft from China Airlines and the company's forecast of softening demand, it wouldn't seem logical. Additionally, it has yet to be proven that the twins can be adapted to the ACMI concept as 747s, DC-10s and MD-11s have.
My definition of cool ? Not trying so hard to be cool.

100% sure:
IF Lufthansa can settle a deal with their pilots, striking for better pay once every week,
THEN Airbus will make official their 10 orders for the A380.

We 'll probably see an A330-200F order.
Airbus is targeting UPS, Eva Air, Air France, Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Northwest as customers.

Wait and see.

I expect to see Delta order a large amount of 737-600/700/800/900, 757-200, 767-300/400, and 777-200/300 at Paris if the pilots give the thumbs up by then. If they haven't voted by then, I expect it to occur after the airshow.

I also see a decent number of airlines ordering the Sonic Cruiser, including Delta, Continental, American, and Emirates.

The better question may be: What WON'T Delta order? Let's get a bit realistic...I know there are a lot of Delta cheerleaders here, but I highly doubt Delta is going to go down almost the entire Boeing lineup and take a few of each!

BA may confirm orders for the 'customised' 777-300's (the lightweight versions powered by RR Trents as opposed to the GE's)

Is there much of a history of US-based carriers making large orders at the Paris Airshow? My impression is that it's usually non-US carriers that might big announcements there.

Don't expect DL to place a huge 737NG order quite yet. This will come in about 5 years to start replacing their MD-80's. Delta probably will order more 777-200ER's to replace the MD-11's, and expand in Asia through ICN.

I personally think it is still to early for a sonic cruiser launch. Then again, we weren't expecting a sonic cruiser at all a month ago, so who knows? I do see the possibility of more 744LR orders or even a new slight stretch of the 744 that I just read about in this weeks AW&ST. Stay tuned!!!

The sonic cruiser is a piece of paper, nothing more. How can people order whats not been designed ??

As for Airbus they already said that they will launch the A330-200F at Paris with two customers.

Don't forget the A340-600 will be there and so will the AN-225. Those two planes would make the whole show for me .

What do Boeing have to show ??. A picture of the Sonic Cruiser ??

I think at the Paris Air Show, I expect the following:

1. DL will make its intentions on future widebody plane purchases. Expect possibly more 767-400ER's and definitely a fairly substantial 777 buy.

2. BA may choose the 777-300ER with the GE90-115B engines anyway, mostly because BA already flies 777-200's fitted with the GE90 engine.

3. LH will likely firm up the orders/options for 10 A380-800's.

4. Expect Air China, China Eastern and China Southern to announce future long-range aircraft jetliner plans.

5. Expect Boeing to announce that the Sonic Cruiser will go into serious R&D phase to just short of the point of an actual aircraft launch. It's likely Boeing may announce the formation of a working group with several major airlines to help finalize the design the plane.

I think we will find out what swissair plans to do with it's A340-600 options. My bet is they move them to A340-300X orders
